How many barrels of oil are still left in the ground, and how long will it last? I'm looking for balanced information, because I've heard figures ranging from around 80 billion to almost 4 trillion.

>> No.4179779

about .08-4 trillion

>> No.4179785

>>4179764
The correct answer is that we do not know.
We can estimate, but we do not know where all of the oil underneath the earth is, if we did, I assure you we would be digging it all up very rapidly.

Over 1 trillion is probably fairly accurate

The guy (Humbold) who foretold the oil mining decline that already hapenned in USA in 70s before anyone saw it coming said we have enough for around 70 years.

The thing is, there is lots of oil, but a huge part of it is in compounds where it takes more energy to extract it then you gain from it. Improving technology might help, but I am a proponent of ending the oil dependency. Oil can be used to create medical drugs and we waste it on personnal transport in order to increase our comfort. That is just retarded.

>> No.4179912

Estimated world oil reserves range from 1.18Tbbl to 1.34Tbbl, which at our present rate of consumption (which is increasing) will last about 40 years.

Quick question, how can we know how much is available if derpy ass scientists are all blinded by consensus (sheep-skin blindness syndrome) into thinking that Oil is biogenic?

Abiogenic oil research is practically non-existent. Yet it must be all those dead Dino's on Titan and Pluto that are producing the hydrocarbons... amirite?

>> No.4180127

>>4180120
Actually we usually do not post at the same time; I tend to avoid posting at the same time as her as she seems to dislike it.
I post in the mornings while she is still sleeping, and she usually posts in the evenings.

>> No.4180254

>>4180127

> Abiogenic oil research is practically non-existent.

So is research into finding the North Pole facilities for Santa Claus. And there's the same and equally good reason for it: Because both don't exist.

If the "abiogenic" pseudo-theory had any teeth at all, then we would not be seeing the deposit depletions that we commonly see. Also, if there actually IS some sort of abiogenic process extant, then from the SAME field depletion data it clearly doesn't act quickly enough to make a noticeable difference.

Now, to address the larger question: How much is left? Our proven reserves (PrRe) are full of LIES, since lying about such reserves has only fulfilled the nefarious economic goals of oil companies and the nefarious political goals of the oil-producing nations (like Saudi Arabia). But let's say we even take those at face value: We have a little over 1.2TBbl to go.

Knowing that, you'd question the rate of new discoveries. Well, new discoveries peaked in the 1960s, worldwide. The dropoff of that discovery rate is fairly clear. So you can't rationally expect that PrRe number to rise much if at all, and given the rate of current finds and the rate of current consumption, it's very likely to just keep falling, since we obviously use up reserves as we continue to consume our ~82MBbl/yr worldwide.

>> No.4180316

[CONT']
There's yet another factor: Overconsumption due to population and consumer growth. And yet another factor: Demand destruction from price increases.

The latter two factors might cancel each other out to the first approximation. If so, then we have 1200000MBbl reserves and 82MBbl/day consumption, hence about 15000 days of oil. That's 40 years.

And pricing peaks in the last 10 years will make it unlikely for most Americans to plan to have their current lifestyles by then. Hence, the America of the 2030s and beyond must be remarkably different: Very much slower or more expensive. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say the America of the 2030s would better resemble the America of the 1930s.
