It's all in the syllabus. There are no surprises.

I got a bunch of B's this semester, but it was my fucking fault.

you have to go above and beyond the requirements

you have to have the concepts in your head so you feel comfortable playing them, instead of forcing yourself to recall what you're supposed to do

I know when something's my fault and I take responsibility for it, but it's not always my fault.

this fucking professor never gave me my work back...how was I supposed to know how I was doing in the class? how was I suppose to know to be working harder? I got As at the beginning of the class so I kept up that degree of work effort...if I'd fucking KNOWN it wasn't good anymore I would have worked harder

So you weren't working your hardest?
Don't expect an A, then.

I work as hard as I need to to get an A in the class.

Drill problems. Then drill more problems. Then teach someone else to drill problems. If they can't understand it, chances are you don't understand it.

YOU CAN'T FUCKING GO THROUGH LIFE DRILLING PROBLEMS.

I think the key to his post was the teaching someone else part. If you can explain it to someone in a way they understand that shows that you have true understanding.

You have to give a shit about the garbage your professor feed you. Frankly, I don't, that's why I have a 3.5 GPA.

Not who you were responding to, but that student is not doing what is required to get As.
Course work load rarely is static throughout its run. Also, nothing is completely not your fault. The student should have hounded the teacher until he received a response and if the student was truly interested in getting As they would have personally visited regularly to stay up to date on their own grade. It's the the teachers responsibility to warn you that your grade is slipping.

No, but you sure can go through college drilling problems. How do you expect to get good at coursework if you don't practice it?

Also, teaching is the best way to drill. Just find someone in your class who doesn't know what the fuck is going on and run problems with them. It benefits both of you.

In war, it's not just about who brings the most troops, who has the best weapons, it is also about who knows the enemy better, who knows the territory better and who has the staunch convictions.

If you want to win the war, you will have to expect the unexpected.
