So what is the real fear of Global Warming?
What is the worst case scenario?
I'm not talking about humanity's worst case, I'm talking about the planet's meteorology.

This book, or the documentary of the same name. Will really put it into a scientific context for you, unlike the shitstorm of irrational opinion that is about to fill this thread.

Worst case?

Sea "on fire" due to released hydrates from ocean bed burning & CO2 going to 5-10%.

huh.

I thought that by nature of the earth being in the 'goldilocks zone' it was impossible to become like Venus; not enough solar energy.

Owch.

Well, humanity would still survive just fine though. We've advanced far enough technologically that we can weather this, at least everywhere that isn't africa or south america.

Worst case scenario is the gulf stream slowing down and stopping which will fuck up most marine ecosystems as well as those that depend on it. Famine Famine Famine.

Less and less effect the more the sea gets fished out.

Speaking as a Brit the idea of the Gulf-stream failing worries me...if the average temp rises 3-4C it'll stop and the loss of oceanic heat it supplies will mean UK temperatures fall by 3 or 4C so...

Ah fuck it, I'm feeling chilly...I'll turn up the boiler.

Hold up a second, just because a current stops flowing in one place doesn't mean it won't flow in another way.
Do scientists even understand the ocean enough to predict the formation and deformation of currents? As i understand it they don't have near enough probes watching the ocean.

Global warming is a phenomenon that has the potential to give scientists jobs, get people elected and make people rich. Other than that its meaningless.

>> No.4168000

Global warming isn't happening. It's just a period of warming that is completely out of our control.

Afterall, how many times have this happened over the entire life span of the Earth? Oh, thousands of times.

And y'know that CO2 was 0.4%? Gasp, that's gonna fucking destroy the planet, according to Al Gore, it's only gonna go up!

Guys, even if were able to put enough CO2 into the atmosphere to fuck things up, its not like volcanoes wont fix the problem. All we got to do is wait for the next volcano to blow up and the cloud will prevent enough sunlight from coming in to cool us back to normal levels

The 2 threads that you dont want to start on /sci/ Religion and global climate change. Mostly because everyone involed doesnt even consider yielding to coherent arguements done by the other party.

>>4168000
Sir and/or madam, I do not see how the procentual change of CO2 is relevant with the incredibly small context you are providing.

What are the consequences on a 50 year timescale for example of this % increase in CO2? Are you aware that the most prominent greenhouse gas with the largest effect is water vapor? And that CO2 and water vapor undergo a cycle that increases their respective effects on global average temperatures?

I think we all have a feeling that your source of choice is some report done funded by a pro-fossil fuel party and that it is of dubious credibility. Could you please tell us the source so we may review it?

I'm quite moderate about the issue actually, but no matter who I'm arguing with I still get cast as a polar extreme simply because of my position on that particular point, and I can't exactly scream "HURR DURR I'M MODERATE" with every post I make.
