how big is the entire scientific/academic research industry, in dollar figures?

like aaalllllllllllllllll of it.

hard mode: can't just quote wikipedia entry for "research"

>> No.4143164

How are we supposed to know how big the classified parts are?

>> No.4143176

>>4143164

ok, i mean how big is all of the stuff that is available to the public (published results in journals, IP that turns into companies/used by companies, academic research that goes nowhere - ie humanities, math)

i take it most everyone here is cramming for finals then and not interested in /sci/ banter.

More than 90 percent of all money spent on scientific research is not spent in academia. It's spent on very minor (and therefore less risky) improvements on existing technologies, for example in industry. That used to be about 95 percent a couple decades ago. Not sure today so I'm using 90% to be conservative.

Finals are over (thank god). I had my last one on Tuesday night. Nailed both fortunately.
