I want to learn another language. I know Basic French because I'm Canadian, but I despise the French language and its people. What's the most useful/transferable in the first world?

I like the prospect of learning German considering English is based on it.

Also I would be able to understand German porn.

Yeah, German is a pretty common trade language in Europe, so I guess it's handy. I plan on learning German. You might want to learn Spanish too, gonna' be the primary language in like 20 years in North America.

lol, you think Spanish is going to take over North America. English is one of the two most widely spoken languages in the WORLD. It's probably the most widely spoken language. Why would that advantage, being able to communicate with almost anyone, disappear?

German isn't a terribly hard language to learn. Up until you hit the Genitiv case. Nobody I've talked to can tell me just WHY they need to use it. But they do. Sometimes.

Fuck chineese. Have you seen that shit ? Is absolutely useless, is an inferior languaje and due to the "computer era" (i.e. the use of keyboards) will become obsolete.

If you wan to open you mind german might not be the best because engish is already a germanic language.

Try either a romanic, or russian. Everything else is a waste of time.

english isn't "based on" german you fuckwit. that's like saying humans are based on chimps. they share a common ancestor.

if you trace old german and old english (and dutch, etc) back far enough you find a common germanic language, but one is not based on the other.

there are a lot of germanic languages; the one spoken in germany is called "german" but it isn't the base germanic language due to that fact; the base germanic language doesn't exist anymore and hasn't for thousands of years.

don't bother learning any new languages, just jump off a fucking bridge.

As a fellow Canadian who also knows basic french, I would recommend spanish or italian. A lot of the words are similar to french, but the pronunciation isn't as difficult. I spent 5 weeks in italy in highschool, and I was able to read their little crappy free commuter newspapers, just based on the french I knew. And I didn't really have any problems in restaurants or shops when they spoke italian to me.

On the other hand, I've tried to learn of bit of german, and it's much harder. A lot of people say german is easy to learn for someone who only speaks english, but if you know your basic canadian highschool french, it will be much easier to learn another romantic language than german, dutch, or other languages.

Russian is only useful in Russia, or places with a big Russian population, of which there are not many. And if you're not white and skinny, and you travel to Russia, they'll skin you alive and feed you to their bears. Alive.
If you're not fat and white and live amongst Russians, then Russian will be the most useful thing ever.

I'm actually studying German right now - it's not terribly complex at the moment but yeah, as someone said before, it's about to get much more complex. My main problem is that in German nouns have gender - but so do nouns in Hebrew (my first language), and they don't correspond at all! A ship is female in Hebrew but non-gender in German, a train is also female in Hebrew but male in German, etc.

Chinese will be spoken, not written, at least until voice recognition software gets much more advanced - writing all the hundreds of different Chinese dialects on standard keyboards is extremely difficult. English is an international language now, for better or worse.

English. Everything else is only useful in very specific contexts (ex: You're an employee in a business that deals a lot with Japan, so it would be useful to know Japanese).

If you made it apparent that you were a tourist that might explain a lot. Most french people don't expect tourists to understand french words and aren't confident enough in their level in english to say english words, so they will often stay awkwardly silent. I'm not saying most of us don't think we live in the best place in the world, but, admit it, in all non-shitty countries most people think their country is the best...

That being said... Go for Chinese.
