>October 1st check out book from college library for a paper
>librarian never told me a due date
>done paper in two weeks and completely forget about book
>7 weeks later, try to check out another book just before the library closes at 6:00 PM
>told I have a book that is overdue and I owe the library $75 in late fees
HOLY FUCK I DON'T HAVE MONEY LIKE THAT TO SPEND ON A BOOK
>panic, rush home and get book from but the library is closed for the long weekend
>return the book first thing monday morning
>get home that day with a letter from the mail: Library Notice The following materials are now assumed lost and a replacement cost has been billed to your account... Lost item fee: $150.00
... I feel like crying, how can I get around this without paying $150.00 for a book that I don't even have anymore

Which library?

Was the due date recorded somewhere else - written down, internets, etc? If not, try arguing your position that the librarian never disclosed a due date.

it wasn't written down anywhere, I had absolutely no idea what it was. Is there usually some kind of library contract you sign into when you become a student or something?

I'd believe so yeah, plus, I'd assume you agree to return books on time when you borrow books, even if it's not explicitly stated it's implied in the whole "late fee"-element.

Can't you borrow from your parents or friends?

just suck it up and eat noodles for a month.

Talk to your library. Most likely the letter was system generated, and since you returned the book, it is no longer applicable. Also the late fees sound high. Many libraries charge about 25 cents per day. So unless you were 10 months late, your library might have made a math error. Ask for a copy of their late policies.

yeah that's what I was thinking, because they told me 50 cents per day and I told them it shouldn't be $75 then. I'll look into it more before paying the money

50 cents oer day
30 days
60 dollar admin fee for "lost book" that gets added to.anything over 30 days

75 dollar replacement fee. Sounds about right. You can probably get the ,75 waived because you returned the book. The 60 dollars will be listed as non refundable. Mifht be able to get the 15 waived too.

All conjecture, but better than 150.
