Wanna-be mathematician reporting in.

Why do people find math to be so hard?

Also, is mathematics an art?

I always thought that this meme has no basis to reality. Then I checked the math programs on the later years and actually found out that you can make a shitload of cash and that you get easily hired with some applied math. Nowhere near the 300k, but still.

That must suck. Can't a physicist do anything a mathematician can do?

>> No.4084598

Problem solvers should be nr 1, rest are 0. Simple math can take you far.

I dunno. Like I said, I was just looking at my uni programs and all physics has is Physics - research (the one I'm in) and then about four or five different courses to make you a high school teacher (only physics teacher, chemistry-physics combo, math-physics combo and shit like that). They all last five years and you choose in your freshman year.
Math on the other hand has three years where everybody has the same classes and then the last two years you choose a field like theoretical math, economy, statistics, something with fluids or whatever; and even have subdivisions in those courses.
I got the feeling that if I don't get into research if and when I finish my degree I'll have a hard time finding a job dealing with physics.

>> No.4084618

there is no way you start anywhere at 300k with any degree. enjoy your dreams.

There are many physicists in the finance field. They are generally hired to some firms because of their abilities for logical problem solving skills. It's a similar reasons for mathematicians. However, you are correct, I am afraid. Mathematicians are more hire-able than a physicist, since a mathematician can apply mathematical models to many more things outside of physics, ie "real world" applications. If a physicist is doing such, they are generally not doing anything in physics and are akin to a mathematician.

This is why I want to be an applied mathematician.

Well, that sucks. My dream would be doing some sort of research. Hell, if I was even just a step above janitor at CERN or something similar working for a pittance I would be very happy. I just suck at math (at least right now) so I don't know if I can make it.

Highly competitive for those positions means somewhere around 120k. That 400k is either a typo or an indication of what they will offer for an industry professional with 8+ years of experience. For econometrics/finance/applied maths/computer science 120k starting for excelling PHD students isn't uncommon, but 300k is.

Pay for mathematicians is still quite high, and it does hold true they can achieve many different career paths; many more than many when compared to those in sciences.

>> No.4084740

>>4084688

Average pay for mathematician debutants in the workforce is lower than most engineers, all doctors economists and even nurse-midwives.

And the latter part just isn't true, mathematicians are only good for quantitative roles. I'd argue that (overall) people with a degree in philosophy or history have more options.

OK math whiz, I've a question.
How can I get 26.846 and 28.636 by multiplying / dividing 14.318 (the latter one is just *2).
And how can I get those same two numbers by multiplying / dividing 17.734?

The population of Hong Kong is lower than that of the Netherlands, so your argument is invalid.

Another example in the Japan and Germany. Two vastly different populations, but Germany has a slightly higher PPP GDP, with Japan having a higher nominal GDP. This makes your argument invalid, as well.
