The year is 2400, all the countries of the planet have united, humanity no longer engages in war with itself. Space exploration has progressed at a steady rate, there are well developed colonies on the Moon, Mars, Venus and several asteroids containing several million people each, in addition to substantial research outposts in orbit around every major body in the Solar System. Humanity began spreading to the nearby star systems roughly 100 years ago at sub light, but still extremely quick, speeds. Remote outposts operate at several of the nearest stars, containing thousands of people, mostly scientists. The exception to this is Alpha Centurai, where a steady stream of civilians have arrived for the past few decades contributing to a population that now numbers in the low millions. Probe data from stars within roughly 40 light years indicates no intelligent beings present and at most land based animals approximately akin to a Parrot in intelligence.

Is there a need for a military? And if so, what form would it take? Purely defensive? What would the fleet strength be, how often would the fleet be renewed?

Feel free to speculate about the military had FTL travel been discovered/made possible extremely recently, although assume significant travel time exists between star systems in the order of weeks, as opposed to the hours or days depicted in science fiction.

If either way you feel there is no need for any defense or offense capabilites, try to justify it. What if a hostile race was encountered?

Sage at will.

It's a thought exercise guys, no need to take it too seriously.

Why? There's nothing useful in that system.
