I want to study the origin of life
The transition of assimilated particles to self replicating organisms for example:

Also the creation of artificial cells that self replicate and are subject to natural selection. Similar to what Craig Venter is doing

Study chemistry, including but not limited Chemical thermodynamics. Study biochemistry and evolutionary biology. Study some physicst too... complex systems, autocatalytic sets and Belousov–Zhabotinsky reactions.

That should get you somewhat equipped to take on the problem.
