http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2011/11/23/china-to-cancel-college-majors-that-dont-pay/

>China’s Ministry of Education announced this week plans to phase out majors producing unemployable graduates, according to state-run media Xinhua. The government will soon start evaluating college majors by their employment rates, downsizing or cutting those studies in which less than 60% of graduates fail for two consecutive years to find work.

>But as the U.S. struggles to cope with its own generation of jobless graduates, the American education system has also come into question and many American college students are rethinking the value of their own majors. What if the U.S. government were to adopt China’s approach? According to the most recent U.S. census data, among the first majors to go: psychology, U.S. history and military technologies.

or they could just only let the rich do them. At least there wouldn't be a glut then.

I, for one, welcome our new Chinese overlords.

Love it, love everything about it. This is the right direction.

My idea of what'll happen:

1. Chinese will drop all useless majors.
2. The USA will do the same, or significantly reduce admission to the useless ones.
3. The Chinese will stop coming over here and flooding our universities, since they won't have the freedom to study what they want AND there will be much more enrollment for the "non-useless" majors since the useless ones will get dropped
4. The USA will belong to the USA, and China will belong to the Chinese

This is glorious.

>>4069912

No, because USA belongs to China now. Haven't you heard?

>> No.4069921

You don't seem to understand that the US keeps useless degrees like women's studies around because there are people who are actually willing to pay to take them.

I want them all to go but U.S. history. Just the knowledge of U.S. history explains a lot of how things are the way they are.

A career based on that history is not profitable, but coupled with other skills, it is highly useful.

And people won't stop paying for them because people are retarded.

What about people that study a topic for reasons other than getting a job?

>> No.4069969

I don't believe universities should be forced to cut their unemployable degrees completely or reduce them arbitrarily. The number of students getting these unemployable degrees per school should be limited to a percentage of the students getting science/engineering/math and other useful degrees.

The philosophy school at the University I went to was bigger than the engineering and science schools combined, and many of the philosophy students were lazy idiots who didn't even give a shit about philosophy. The university just wanted more students for more money so it created a massive program any idiot could blow tuition on.

Correction. There are people who are willing to take federal loans and grants that they will regret later in life to pay for these degrees. If we made these types of degrees require people to pay out of pocket or cap their enrollments we wouldn't be graduating such an excess of arts and humanities majors.

It seems to me that they should just cat back the fields and fold them into one comprehensive course list.
Make English Professors like Physics professors: educated and understanding so much they can be used in just about anything.
Lib-Arts is just a category.
Humanities would also work as a general-purpose consultant.
The one major that should always stay separate from the rest is History. It's the only one that directly studies the past.

>> No.4070024

They're maybe 20 people in the country who truly want to study and are passionate in each bullshit field. The rest just are retards trying to get a piece of paper saying they're employable.

>psychology, U.S. history and military technologies.

Just to eliminate the people who will easily spot the US psy-ops against its own people.

The purpose of school is not to make you employable.
