So hi /sci

computer sci fag in here

i study at a certain university, and i am
responsible for the computational resources in
there
so today i got a brand new supercomputer

well its not exactly a Cray
but i know that it has 200 processing cores
at 2.33 Ghz and a total of 240 gigs of RAM

but the pre-problem is
that i spend all day with that huge stuff there
sittig idle with all that computing power
and rarely someone processes something

ppl of physcs and some ppl from applied math
are the most frequent
that is twice a month..

so i came here looking for ideias
for things to process there

any suggestions / requests?
PS today i was doing
mandelbrot fractals and some prime numbering

SETI@Home FTW or you could run the worlds most Epic Minecraft server. But seriously is there a possibility of hiring out runtime to e.g research companies and make some money for the Uni?

You know BOINC? Run Folding@HOME, or one of the math problem solvers. Ask whoever pays the power bill first, of course.

>>4066945
I told you, it's sadly insufficient.

>> No.4066985

I vote for SETI or other distributed computing projects.
However, keep in mind that you would not just spend free computing power on them, but also electricity. So you should check, if it's really okay to do so.

good ones
looked into both
and gonna try i think

the power is free for the university in our country

>> No.4067000

Here's the thing OP: They bought these shiny new servers for the math department, not for you to fuck around with- they don't even let emeritus comp sci professors fuck around on a supercomputer for most of the month for anything less than a paper. . Unfortunately that means whatever is suggested isn't going to be allowed without the express permission of the dean, or at least the math department. I recommend you have a look at BOINC projects and select a few (uFluids or enigma look look like good bets)

Even if the power is free, you may well get in trouble for using too much. Where are you, China?

oh i got it
the thing is that i babysit all day that ginourmous thing
and I am the guy that authorizes ppl to use

the power is not even metered
cuz the university belongs to the govt.
as the power company
so does not make sense it paying itself the pówer

F(x) = f '(x) + c?
I thought that capital F(x) means the antiderivative of a function. Not sure though. I never used that notation, I've just heard of it.
