lately i've seen a lot of coments from people stating that biology isn't a science, that it's just memmorization and not hard. some of this might be true, as there are a lot of things to memorize in biology. but wouldn't the same go for chemistry? i've studied chemistry for two years before i started at biology, and in my experience, chemistry is mostly memorization with a few relatively simple formulas to it. further more biology is basicaly a specialized branch of chemistry, same as medicine is a branch of biology.

in pic. Escherichia coli with antibiotica resistance, that i made.

It makes them feel better to belittle another subject so that theirs look better by compairson. Ultimately every subject is simply memorizing different things.

1. Your English is atrocious at best.
2. It has nothing to do with memorization vs. understanding. It has to do with observation vs. experimentation. Biology is NOT a science because it does not have test hypotheses via experimentation.
3. Your English really is quite bad. I really do want you to kill yourself.

It is a meme spouted by high school kids and first year "look at me, I have smoked weed every day/didn't study for exams and I've got A in xyz" college idiots.

If you can't test a hypothesis via experimentation in Biology then how did we come to learn everything that makes up biology? Did someone just state what does what something does and everyone just stuck with that?

The "biology is not a science" people are just christians in disguise.

yes i'm dyslectic and i'm not from an english speaking country.

> biology don't test hypothesises via experimentation
that is just ridiculus, obviously you have never read a report on any biological experiment. posibly one of the dumbest things i've heard on /sci/.

does anyone who is not retarded and uterly knowledgeless on the subject have any better reasons?

yeah probably true

Haha, what? And these days you need a lot of math knowledge to do anything worthwhile in bio. Almost every lab here now has bioinformatics and computational biologists working for them. In fact, I'd say modeling biological phenomenon with mathematical formulas is some of the most complicated shit you can get yourself into nowadays because nearly every time you run an experiment you have to add new motherfucking variables for the damn thing to work. In the end you have some ungodly equation outsourced from the math department that works half the time. Now you have to explain that shit with all the bio you memorized or else journal editors shit on you. No longer enough to observe, need to come up with shit.

Anyone who understands complexity theory knows that the humanities are just as valuable as science.

biology is a science, it isn't 'hard' science.

there's too much variation in biology, nothing is really 'set'. in addition to this, biologists seem to have a statistically lower intelligence than the hard sciences.

also, it's common for chemists/physicists to make fun of biologists, see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physics_envy

i'm a physics grad student, and we troll the life science department all the time.

At least we get grant money. You guys are the most underfunded second to math but the fuck do they need money for lol, salaries?

we get plenty of grant money (depending on the research topic/attention from the press, just like any other field), i don't know what/where you're coming from.

I would not recommend anyone to base any sort of decision off of information they find on 4chan. Biology is a science, I'm not saying that because I like Biology in particular, I'm saying that because it's a fact. The only reason people on this board belittle Biology is because they are not satisfied with who they are as people. They are probably better than average at math related subjects and use their talent as a crutch to compensate for their inabilities. It's sad that a website like 4chan attracts these types of people because personally, I think the quality of discussions that takes place here suffers because of this.
