So, we all know space is expanding which means the space between our atoms is expanding ever so slightly, does this mean that a hundred years ago we were fucking small compared to how large we are now?

>> No.4025118

yep.

>> No.4025117

>expanding ever so slightly
>fucking small compared to

>> No.4025125

op, are you retard? your sentence isn't even logically consistent.

do you understand the magnitude of how slow the expansion is, relative to human time? (decades/centuries?)

>> No.4025127

>100 years

that's not much on a geological scale, nevermind cosmological

>>4025125
If it's so slow then why are things moving away from each other at a rate "faster than light"

>> No.4025157

>>4025153

because there is alot that is expanding?

That's a great answer, you must be really smart.

Things below the scale of a galaxy aren't affected at all by the metric expansion of space.

>> No.4025183

OP is technically correct in that our atoms are expanding (or well the space between them) but the effect is too small to be noticeable in human timespans

>> No.4025191

Hubble constant is 71 km/s/Mpc, so if you are 6 feet tall, in 100 years you will grow 13.2 nanometers.

>> No.4025195

>>4025112
The space between our atoms is not expanding. There are other forces holding them together against the expansion of space.

Galaxy clusters are moving apart because gravity is too weak at that distance to counteract the expansion.

>>4025191
BUT BUT.

Nah you're right OP is just a faggot.

>> No.4025203

OP is not correct. Atoms are not getting bigger. Their size is set by quantum mechanics, and if you try to stretch them, they shrink back.

>> No.4025209

>>4025195
there.

>>4025191

This is what OP was looking for, everyone else is a fucking faggot fag.

No. This is not how it works.

>> No.4025229

Oh good Lord the retardedness in this thread is insane... when we say that space is expanding, we don't literally mean that all spaces are growing spacier: we mean that all galaxies are accelerating away from each other.

tl;dr: no

lord almighty I always took the idea that the universe was expanding to mean that individual objects were still tightly clustered as ever, i.e. a human being will still be the same size, Earth will be the same size (not accounting for geological factors, just cosmological factors), and whatnot, its just that every object will be moving farther and farther away. Stars will start to fade into blackness. Empty night skies save the moon and the sun.

>> No.4025261

The forces that keep us together also prevent us from being "expanded" by the expansion of the universe. So, the solar system is not changing in size because gravity cancels out the effects.
