Can /v/ help me with this? I'm studying for a final and have no idea how to approach this question.

I have a wine cask with a diameter of 20cm and a depth of 50cm. The cask is not full, the meniscus of the wine remaining lies at a 40 degree angle when the cask is tipped on its side. I need to find the volume of the wine remaining.

Sorry for the poor image.

Sorry, I meant /sci/. I have no idea why I said /v/.

OP here, this is as far as I got. I need to find the area of the green part, but I don't know how to go about it.

That 80 degree section of the circle is 2/9ths of the circle's area. Find the area of the circle, and subtract 22.22...% of it. Add the area of the triangle, and then subtract the area of the circle. The absolute of that value is the area of the green part.

?

>>3998109

Area (circle) = 314.159cm²
Area (22% of circle) = 69.813cm²
Area (triangle) = 49.240cm²
Area (green) = 20.573cm²

So how do I get the volume of wine from this? I can't find the volume of the green area with a depth of 50cm because it's an irregular shape.

maybe they can.

You could probably integrate it lol. Top bound being the arc, bottom the constant.

Find area of cylinder, subtract 22.22...% of it. Find area of triangular prism, add that to the cylinder less 22.22...%. You're finished.

Volume you dumb nigger.

shit like this i always figure out the total volume and deduct the empty space volume

you're welcome

oh, and a meniscus is not level, so you would need to account for that as well

and while you're figuring it out, you might drink a glass or two, and that would lower the volume too

again, you're totally welcome

>> No.3998238

Volume (cask) = 15714.286cm^3
Volume (22% of cask) = 3492.064cm^3
Volume (tri-prism) = 1230.962cm^3

So this would give me 13453.184cm^3 as the wine's volume.

God damn shit was tough. I can't imagine how I'd fare in an exam with this question without this thread.

>>3998234

Kind of hard when the only data you have is the radius, depth, and angle at which the meniscus touches the barrel.

>>3998237

A meniscus is only concernable with radii under 2cm. Otherwise it's negligible.
