Any actual engineering majors here? How's the work load? My counselor is telling me that if I do get into my top choices that I probably won't be able to handle my engineering courseload and still have a life.

PS: engineers are gay spam aka bumps are welcomed

I found the time to go to a few parties every month. Eight or more hours of homework a night on top of class time was regular though. During finals I'd be completely locked away for days.

I'm an honours student in computer science, Im in the university rowing team and Im also in a student corpus. I wont say fraternity because 1) Im in europe and 2) frats are for proles.

If you dont waste all your time on 4chan you can have time to party on the weekend at the very least. Plan to do at least 8 hours/day of class+homework during the week and you should be fine.

>> No.3957515

It was a breeze for the first two years, then shit started to get serious. But it wasn't terrible... I would have maybe 10 to 15 hours of homework a week for all of my classes. Projects took considerably more time in addition to that, but it was manageable. I still had weekends to fuck shit up.

Grad school is a different beast altogether, but I still went out on occasion.

ME 3rd year.

Some semesters are better than others. Not every professor is the same. Last semester I was turning in about 40 pages of calculations per week for homework. This semester it's about half of that but the problems are more difficult.

They already broke my spirit so I just push on at this point.

Second year EE

Honestly, it's not so bad thus far. I never really have been a big studier, though, I normally can retain information really well. I don't go to parties anyway, so it doesn't matter to me. I have a lot of free time, though.

>> No.3957615

4th year EE. Whenever I hear people say they spend 10 hours studying a night I typically feel like they more just fail at managing their time or something. If you do all your assignments when they're assigned, and prepare for exams weeks in advance, you should only have to do a few hours of homework each night.

In order to do well in engineering, all you need is a shit tone of paper to get through millions of practice problems.

You reach a point where order of magnitude matches are pretty good results.

All the shit they tell you to assume was negligible in the first year that you learn to account for in the second year might not be calculated for in the results of the third year.

4th year biomedical engineering.
I drink 2-4 times a weekend, occasionally go to clubs, smoke weed once or twice a week (used to be a stoner and smoke almost everyday, freshman and sophomore year), and party pretty hard with a group of friends that drinks and smokes a lot.

My grades have suffered quite a bit from this, the work load gets pretty heavy especially in your 3rd year. So yeah, I have a pretty active social life, but my GPA is also right around 2.8. You can have a life and have above a 3.0 if you're not a retard about school like me.

>>3957698
yeah I know, but in the past, they only wanted to know how well we could manage computations. Only orders of magnitude have global physical sense. But I think it's important to know how to get enough precision when needed too!

I'm doing computer engineering and taking physics 2, discrete math, computer science 1, and calculus 3. It's not crazy but it's a decent amount of work. I spend most of my time studying, and all my friends are out at other schools so even when I have to time to go out there's no reason. So I usually just spend that time studying as well.

The only reason I said the classes is because people have told me that if I can survive this semester non of the others will be as difficult.

Why are 1st or 2nd years even replying to this thread? You're not engineers: just inferior mathematicians.

If you haven't passed statics/dynamics, go to /lit/ and give them some help with their college algebra.

junior mechanical/energy engineering major here.

half our class dropped out freshman year. sophomore year, half of the remaining changed to shit tier disciplines.

the die-hards and i gather weekly to drink and do our studying/homework/labs/research/etc.

anythings possible when you know the outcome: making 60k+ USD out of university (shit tear cash but in this job market its significant), with prospects of 150k+ in ten years.

4th year chemical engineering major here. I attend a fairly large public university. I have a 3.7 GPA and I did research for two years, so I'd say I'm doing pretty well. Honestly, I haven't found it to be that hard, although I have a knack for math, so that probably helps. I don't manage my time too well so I pull all-nighters four times a month or so, but the rest of the time I have plenty of free time that I spend exercising, playing video games, playing guitar, surfing the interwebs, and partying on weekends. I think you'll be fine, in my experience it's not as bad as some people say.

bump

>> No.3958754

I think a lot of people hype it up to be a lot worse than it really is. You will be pulling some all-nighters sometimes, but this is entirely dependent on you and your ability to manage your time.

It may sound cliche, but if you can be good at managing your time that is an extremely powerful asset and it will take you very far in your degree.

Personally I'm still quite poor with my time management, I find myself catching up with lectures and pulling all-nighters to finish assignments when things get busy in a semester, but I think most people go through that.

Just fuckin' do it brah.
