I'll keep this short and sweet. I am currently attending the University of Alabama, but have been accepted as a transfer student into Georgia Tech. I am an aerospace engineer major, so Georgia Tech is one of the top colleges for this degree, and in most rankings is right below Stanford (which is right below MIT). I have no interest in attending purely for my undergraduate degree though. Instead, I am only interested in getting into a great graduate school (UCB, Stanford, MIT, etc). Now I am curious as to whether they pay much attention to where you went for undergrad. If they weight that heavily, I will transfer. But if they don't care as much about that as they do say research or gpa, then I will remain here as 1. It is easier here to make a high gpa than it would be at GT (relatives did engi there and said it was harder), and 2. I actually have fun here and know alot of people, as this is a much bigger campus.

I tried calling but noone I spoke to really knew or cared to inform me. Thought I would ask around here as I know some of you guys have been to these school and gone to graduate school. But like I said, if undergrad isn't a big enough factor to need to transfer, i'll just stay here and focus more on research, volunteer work, and gpa.

whats your question?

If it's known that GT is more difficult then someone with the same GPA from GT will probably beat you for the top positions, all other things being equal. If you think that you can get some good research done along with other things that they might look at when considering your application then you should be fine. GREs will count too and they should be independent of where you went.

Still, the fact that GT is more difficult probably means you would learn more there, at least on university time. How much of your "free" time you put it might offset that though.

What's the difference in tuition fees and living costs?

Ultimately I think it will depend on whoever is evaluating your application later. Some will be much more impressed by GT than UA, others won't give a shit about the name of the university (as long as it's not a shit-tier degree mill).

I go to Alabama too...

lets just say, 3.9 GPA @ GT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>3.9 @ UA for any field of science.

Now, if you solve some complicated problem in dealing with space dust or something then its two shits to the winds what your gpa or school is.

You have to make the school want YOU not the school want the other school...

Right..ok

I just don't want to be at a disadvantage because I went to UA instead of GT. I plan to do a lot of research and such, just wasn't sure how much of a factor the school you went to was.

Excellent Tim, you see the real keys to success come from within, not from an institution or body of people.

For instance, my cousin, Thomas, had a 2.3 GPA coming out of Appalachian State, but during his time there he developed a mechanism for controlling stomatic contractions in flowering plants, now he attends Stanford...

Seems like a very intelligent man if I do say so myself. Perhaps I shall harness the power of neutrinos and develop a propulsion system consisting purely of launched neutrinos going faster than the speed of light. Then, my friends, I will not only establish myself a position at MIT, I shall simultaneously reverse time and implode the universe. Prepare, 12/12/12, the day I destroy the universe as we know it.

Usually I charge people for what I'm about to tell you, but just this once I will let you in on the first step of ten that will take your life from that of a blundered, alcoholic, street sweeper to the next Carlos Slim Jim.

Step one is manual breathing. When we come out of the womb we are encumbered with this innate weakness called automated respiration. To get your life on the right track you must learn to conquer this disability and place your breaths on the right track. A system of 1....2....3...2..1 is the optimal level of human breathing and you should learn it!

Breathing is always automatic. Even if we become conscious about the fact that we are doing it, it is still automatic. Not sure what you meant by 1 2 3 2 1

Then let me go ahead and tell you about step two since I'm in a generous mood today...

Step two involves a somewhat complicated system of corneal transplants. You see, within you there needs to be the spirit of the beast. A wild, unnameable animal that will not stop until it gets it way. WHAT ANIMAL INSPIRES YOU??? Eye of the tiger maybe? Vision of the eagle? Whatever it might be, the simplest method of unlocking their spirits is to see with their eyes.

With purchase of my book I will reveal to you over one dozen licensed and trained eye surgeons who will guide you through step two.

If you transfer to GT, expect to give up most of your free time. Also, expect sausage-fest 24-7. If those aren't a problem, and you can hold up a solid, do it.
