hey, i need some help with a metaphysics essay. the question is

"Is it credible, as Utilitarians suppose, that we can practice ethical theory as a science?

So is it possible to develop an ethical theory and practice constructed upon purely rational (but still humanistic) grounds? In other words, is it plausible to develop this so-called ethical calculus by which to determine the worth of an individual lives and groups of lives"

I just need some basic help with it, such as things to write about, read about etc. My prof. recently died, so our course has been pretty messed up which is why I need the help.

Thanks.

It's all subjective, so no.

It has always seemed to me that a practical form of utilitarianism would require a depth of knowledge of the consequences of actions far and away from what we actually have and will conceivably have in the future, if it is to be distinguishable in practice from just about any other ethical system.
