Yeah, philosophy is REAL fucking useful.

philosophy spawned math and science

Not all philosophers are worthless. Take Dennett, Hume, Locke, Mills.

Everything is relative therefore 1+1=/=2?

Everything is relative therefore fuck your face?

1+1 IS =/= 2 if you apply dark numbers.

Philosophy is physics without mathematics.

Children, children.

Mathematics is is abstraction.

Define "1", "2", "+", and "=" before you do anything.

1+1=2 is a human definition.

I feel like scientists should be able to appreciate the parts of philosophy that spawned scientific advancement, mathematics, new perspectives/fields (cogsci coming from philo of mind/language), etc., but be able to disregard the stupid shit that has no relation at all to progress. (The question "What is progress?" being an example of what is useful to consider so that we know exactly where we stand and what we should be aiming for; the question "What is being?" being a useless one).

You fucking retard, 1+1 = 2 only with baryonic matter, dark matter and dark energy don't follow the same axioms as baryonic matter. With dark matter, 1+1 =/= 2

Yea, i hear yea OP. I signed up for a logic class for an elective.
> itsatrap.jpg
Wasn't what i expected it to be. Turned out to be just a bunch of hippies trolling about politics and religion with really weak illogical arguments.
>dropped the class a week later to get full refund.

How unfortunate, my philosophy class intro to logic was exceptionally good and useful. It might as well have been in the math department as much as it belonged in the philosophy department.

Philosophy has profound effects on the human understanding of their role in life and society and the forces that shape those lives. Philosophers create movements and new ways of thinking that change the world and society (Marx, Hegel, Aristotle, Nietzsche, Machiavelli, Voltaire, Kierkegaard, Plato, Wollstonecraft, St.Augustine)

Have profound effects on culture, art, and literature (Sartre, Foucalt, Baudrillard)

Or can give us a better understanding of ourselves in our search for a "truth" or a meaning in our lives. It gives an individual fulfillment and a view by which they conduct their behaviors and understand the world around them. No this does not invent machines or save lives. It has no ultimate immediate practical benefit. It is not, however, useless shit. The greatest philosophers of humanity have done more to move the world than petty inventors and common engineers.

In a strictly utilitarian view, most philosophy is quite useless. Instead of taking shitty Philo 101 classes try reading the best philosophical literature. Educate yourself. If you don't want to waste time in useless discussion with hippies and retards then don't.

Putting my serious face on here for a second:

You guys are really missing out if you discount philosophy so quickly. Properly handled, philosophy is an invaluable tool to improve your ability to reason and debate, while opening your mind to new ideas. Philosophy, properly done, should leave you dumbstruck with how incompetent we are at doing anything.

this

The only reason i hated Philo were discussions. Listen, im here to learn. If you can provide me with a reasonable person able to pass the knowledge and inspire the thinking along the way, great. If not, dont take my money and make me listen all kinds of unfunded claims and agenda driven monologs.
