Which of these two programs should I acquire:

Maple 15 or Mathematica 8?

>> No.3874563

both. pirated.

You probably need your money more than the companies who made it.

>mfw I've pirated

matlab
mathematica
autocad
autocad civil 3d
ANSYS workbench (including everything)
abaqus

makes me happy, especially knowing 1 commercial license of ANSYS costs around $100,000

I thought they charged by the core.

You'd probably pay full price if you had a big ass company with the money.

Fuck them, they're proprietary.

Not much you can't do with a few decent languages (Haskell, ML, Scheme, etc.), some theorem provers (Coq, HOL, etc.), and some front-end layers (Scilab, SAGE, Maxima, Gnuplot, Numpy, etc.)

If anyone requires you to use proprietary software to get work done (like my Uni course tried to do) then that's coercion, which is illegal (they're changing the terms of a contract after agreement, by trying to add on the terms of the proprietary software's license agreements).

you should pirate solidworks. It immediately phones home once it's been cracked, or so the rumor goes.

What do you do with said pirated wares?

Don't go for Maple. The language sucks, the interface REALLY sucks, and the core is nothing special. The interface is coded by people who have no idea about what a good programming environment is. Also, it's becoming worse and worse with new versions, at least until Maple 12, which is when I gave up using Maple all-together.

Don't use Maple.
Don't use Maple.
Don't use Maple.

I beg you.

I really like Mathematica much better (although I haven't used Matlab s lot).
It's just that I know C++ pretty well, and Matlab now rests in a very narrow space when it's not quite quick small problem or exploratory programming (Mathematica is definitely better in these), but still not a large computational-heavy task (in which case C++ would probably be 5-10 times faster).
The only real advantage of Matlab is a lot of packages for different fields, but I almost don't have a need for them.
