Mars has a rather alkaline soil composition, but there's plenty of plants on earth that'll grow in worse. Domes would be awesome to start off with while you explore and figure out how the fuck to deal with the problems with transforming, IE keeping solar wind from flicking away what little atmosphere you get from melting dry ice that's every bloody where... and what to do about the fact that any sea there would become uninhabitable by common fish and plants pretty quick (see what may happen to the worlds oceans when earth's continents all group back up in the future).

The soil of Mars is cold. So you'd have to keep applying heat. (The Moon is probably worse; deep regolith temperatures are -40F.) Also, soil is composed of the three physical components (sand, clay, organic matter), and then includes a certain minimum of micro-organisms, plus water. You can play fast and loose with the soil components, but you at least need nutrients and water (which makes it an exercise in hydroponics, not soil).

Soil conditioning would be a big task for dome inhabitants. And there's no hope for soil conditioning to work out in the open (at frigid temps and 1% standard pressure).

You are ignoring the fact that mars has much thinner atmosphere which is made mostly of CO2, which is a greenhouse gas. It means that whatever energy comes in, it will be used more efficiently.
We won't have orbital mirrors soon, I'm hoping for a small base that will be expanded first.
