Well, there is no direct evidence he lived, but the same is true of many spiritually important people from the era and before. Zarathustra for example. There's not any direct evidence that he was a real person either.

My hunch is that Jesus was a real person, but was a sort of sock puppet for later writers, kind of like Plato's literary Socrates.
