When a source has shown itself to be reliable on countless occasions, one can tend to rely on it.

Given than wikipedia not only has the information, but also posts citations and sources for you to follow it up, and has a means to correct and update itself, I have no problem generally relying on it.

I am comfortable using it as a resource for trivial matters based on it's entries alone. For any real research, it is one of the best jumping off points you can find.
