I'm having a one of those fucking retard moments. How would I simplify (1-a)²? (1-a) represents the base and it's squared, so that would be (1-a)(1-a) right? Then if I distributed... 1(1-a)-a(1-a) = 1-1a-1a+a² = a²-2a+1? I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing..

Think about it like this:

Negative variable is debt. So, you owe $a. Multiply that debt times a positive number means you increase the amount of debts (owe ten dollars to one friend, and ten dollars to another, so you owe ten times 2, or -10*2 = -20).

Now, say negative variable times negative variable. You owe ten dollars to one friend and owe negative times that, or non-debt. So, -10 dollars *-2 debts equals positive.

Of course, positive times positive would be surplus times surplus, so positive.

The full problem is this:

13=√(1-a)²+(3+9)²... and now that I resolved my little dilemma over the a's, I have a new problem.

My work progresses from the above problem into this:

13=√a²-2a+145

169=a²-2a+145

24=a²-2a so... would I divide both sides by -2?

In that case: -12=a²/-2+a... right? I'm stuck.. again.
