3805528 No.3805528 [Reply] [Original]

So, someone posted this game in a thread yesterday and I'm hooked.

http://biogenesis.sourceforge.net/

Basically, you create (or just randomly generate) a few line organisms and watch survival of the fittest at work. "Genes" like colors, lengths, angles, etc. are passed on from organism to organism.

I recommend changing the mutation percentage setting in the parameters to 0.01% for best results, otherwise evolution happens a little too quickly for organisms to play off of each other.

Picture related: my game after a few dozen generations. Basically, some immobile green and blue plants with decent defenses and small mobile creatures that seem to have been bred to attack them.

OP, I have been playing this for the past 4 hours.
I had the mutation rate at 0.1%, because 0.01% was a little too slow for me. I also changed the gene values so that green was the most common, followed by cyan, then red. Blue & the rest were set to 1.
What I noticed was that it seemed to go in cycles. There would be periods of green&red fixed in space, just converting CO2 to O, and then when the CO2 started to get low, a mutant would crop up and just go nuts, swinging the entire system into a state of many mobile forms, which, after a while, would settle back into the green&red phase.

Pic is one such related red&green phase

>> No.3806311

Seems nice, I accidentally added an extra 0 to the mutation rate and figured I'd stick with it. Also I copied and spammed one organism that didn't survive well but looked sort of like a dragon. There's a big cluster of plants that just started to die from the inside out. I'll probably wait overnight and see what happens. I'd be interested if there was a way to add obstacles to movement to help separate the different populations, but making a larger map works for keeping populations separate to some extent.

I remember a similar shareware program in the 90's called 'Evolve!'. Here's how it worked:
- Up to 4 different types of species active at a time. The individual specimens are represented by dots.
- Each dot has an energy value that depletes over time depending on its metabolism. Energy depletes faster when the dot is in motion, higher metabolism allows faster movement.
- If three or more similar-colored dots are near a lone dot of a different color, the lone dot is consumed and its remaining energy goes to one of the three dots at random.
- Each individual dot has nine 'genes' that determine how it moves depending on how many friends (0, 1 or 2+) and enemies (0, 1 or 2+) are nearby. A dot can keep moving in a straight line, turn around, turn left, turn right, stop, or randomly make a decision between these options.
- Two dots with enough energy can occasionally expend energy to spawn a new dot with randomly-selected and mutated genes from both parents.
- Each dot also has genetically-determined rates for metabolism, mutation, and reproduction. These percentages are averaged from parents and can also be mutated.
- Lastly, dark green dots can spawn in specific areas of the screen, or globally. They give a random amount of energy to any dot that passes nearby.

So, the basic idea is that you design species with specific genes, throw them into the same screen and watch which one dominates, or whether they manage to coexist, and how they inevitably change. You could have passive dots which cluster around dark-green spawnpoints, or you could have predatory dots which continually move across the screen hunting in large clusters, and so on.

I don't know how many hours I sunk into this game. It's too bad I don't have a screenshot.

Eventually a fluke mutation creates a predator then you have a period of flux, eventually ending with blueplant and all the predators die off, with no predation monogreen re-emerges and out competes blueplant and another monogreen phase begins.

However alongside that their seems to be a trend towards increase numbers of genes and hence faster mutations, so the cycles are getting shorter

I think I've got fairly interesting design here. It evolves into a number of different variations, most of which have a larger red area on the front end, but tends to stay mobile since staying still makes it more vulnerable form the rear. Starting off the population with gray instead of yellow got it to stagnate since moving around brought too much risk of deadly collision.

Looking at it now. I like some of the ideas for changing the lifespan, like allowing larger creatures to live longer and so on, though I would allow genetics to play a small part in lifespan as well.

I'm also thinking about changing the way that creatures die - allowing limbs to be eaten and such instead of dying all at once - but I am unsure of exactly how to work that.

I haven't gotten anything mosquito-like to thrive past the emergence of ferris wheels and swastikas. There is a brief window where these spear things can do some damage (red/gray yellow cyan) but I've triend injecting them late-stage and they cannot thrive.

I have everything at 10, except gray which is 1, and it also has a maintenance of 2. Blue and cyan have a maintenance of 0.1, only red and green are free. No matter how active things are at first, the appearance of wheels suddenly selects against cyan and everything eventually becomes wheels / swastikas / stars / variation on that theme.

This thing evolved out of my favorite creature so far, and then it ate the ecosystem nearly to death.

It was basically the evolutionary reset switch. Only a small number of plants survived that evolved a blue shield.

Then they eventually got really big because nothing else existed, and then the CO2 crashed and only the small ones survived.

Many of them looked like tie-fighters, with forward-facing, red tips on their wings. A lot of them also had red-lined bowl shapes that actually caught other creatures inside and kind of slowly digested them.

But as I said in the other thread, yesterday, the only way I've found to get really nice, long-term evolution like that is to either turn "gray" segments off completely or turn the probability down very low (like 1). Otherwise, nearly every time, you'll end up with a bunch of poisonous plants (green in the middle with gray outside) because they are unkillable and kill everything else instantly on contact.

I had a 3 creature set up working well for a while, but eventually blue plants won. Then they evolved into all green plants, which were better at gathering energy, and then a few predators evolved. The cycle begins again!

Still not recreated the 3 creature set up though.

I love this game.

followup on these settings

The huge cost on gray and the very, very minor cost on blue has seemed to prevent most standoffs, though overall it still seems to select against cyan. I can't seem to create a creature where the payoff for movement is worth it. I'm thinking about putting the minimum cost, even on red and green, at 0.01. Trying it out now.

Nothing is free, bitches. Nothing.

does anyone else interfere and then feel bad about it?

followup again
minor cost on red and green created a blue standoff. Blue bumped from 0.1 to 1.

I think the problem is that any creature with cyan will 'lose' to the same creature with green instead of cyan. Consider making everything except for cyan cost energy.

>Go into genes, try setting probability for green and blue to zero so that such genes are can only be gained by inheriting them form an ancestor, creating distinct types of organism.
>It turns out the program doesn't allow you to set green to less than one.

I had a pretty cool set up of small cyan and white creatures living symbiotically with yellow and green plants.

The plants had big groups of offspring, so both species could grow at the same time. The small cyan and white creatures basically use the plants as an egg field.

Sometimes, blue tank plant and mosquito can coexist without any going extinct.

I started this game when it was posted on /v/ two days ago, the same date as the OP here.

They're all dead.
I'm sad.

Ive had mine running since for about 6 hours and ive seen some cyclical evolution.

These little v bugs grew, and then they evolved into lines with bits jutting out. Then the plants evolved shells and the bugs grew grey bits. then the plants shells turned blue, and then the v shapes came back, but now with the added grey flavor

Sorry to hear that. Maybe next time you wont lose them as soon.

Question, anyone who's been running long-term games, how many mass extinction events have you had?

All of your guy's worlds look so nice and varied.

I've gotten a bunch of full green plants sitting around while wild card ones with mobility zoom around before dying ;_;

Just set grey and blue to the same value. They counter one another.

Downside is that having either develop makes things boring, and if they both develop, then your world ends.

Oh really? I'll agree this game isn't as biodiverse as I'd like, but it certainly prospering.

Natural selection can be quite harsh.

Also this one started with only random genes and some slight pushes.

Ok, apparently either Java is screwy on this one computer, or it has video card issues. I'm now running at a proper speed on my laptop (no more 4 fps for me!)

Possibly networking will work properly too.
