phd is niche field of research which is super hit or miss.

if you do a phd on say aniostrophy of magnetic domains in paragametnic superfluids, you'll never find an industry application

but if you do a PhD on the electromagnetic properties and theromagnetic stability of dynamic length pulsed radio frequency antennas you'll find fuck tons of jobs (defense / communications mostly)

>> No.3780671

I'm not sure what's the problem with the expression "PhD in quantum physics". Sure, that's suspicious, but because it's unlikely, not because the sentence isn't formulated properly.

Depending on who I'm talking with, I describe my PhD differently. To people who are clearly not scientists, I say "mathematics". To people who might know what computer science is, I say "computer science". If I think people will know what I'm talking about, I say I'm doing a PhD on coding theory. I've never really used the technical words of my PhD subject when talking with someone that I didn't meet at either my lab or a conference / workshop, because even these people most often don't know what the most important term is.

>> No.3780672

>>3780661
It depends on what university are you studying at. Some schools do offer PhD's for summing up all knowledge in certain areas. Those universities are usually the not-very-prestigious ones.

>> No.3780681

>>3780661
It's not like he said his PhD subject was "quantum physics". That, indeed, is not possible. But the fact that he was working on quantum physics and doesn't feel like it's worth giving specifics, that is understandable.

Though, it was most likely a troll, we can all agree on that.

80 years ago, maybe. Quantum physics is a tool now, not an area of study. Like newtonian mechanics. Quantum field theory is important in theoretical particle physics, string theory, and supersymmetry, but it isn't really an area of study by itself.

A PhD in "quantum physics" would be like an Md in "stethoscope".

>> No.3780721

>>3780671
"So, Billy, what did you get your PhD in?"
"Symmetric fluxon transport in superconducting networks."
"what?"
"quantum physics"
"ooooooooooh!!!"

I'd say a PhD in quantum physics is certainly different from one in cosmology, or thermodynamics, or education, or or or. Sure, it's not that precise, but it still is descriptive. When dealing with people don't even know what PhD stands for, explaining anything involving more than three syllables usually isn't worth your time.

the message of this video (and others like it) is more along the lines of "know exactly what you're getting in to, and be realistic about it"

which is what most normal people tend to do

>> No.3780754

Back to the subject at hand, it's true today that a lot of people are thinking about going to graduate school, and doing it for the wrong reasons. While it's certainly neither a career killer or maker, it's still a side-track. You better do it because you LOVE what you do. Otherwise, it's not worth it.

It's great that people associate science with all these amazing things. However, they don't seem to understand that "science" is a job like any other, with a lot of very boring parts. With a lot of bullshit to deal with. (Ever written a grant proposal? FML.) They don't realize they see the very tip of a huge pile of research done over years. Yes, it is truly interesting, but you have to be willing to deal with all the tedious parts. Over several years if you get two or three good results, that's par for the course. Fantastic discoveries and so forth happen perhaps once a decade.
