At last I truly see.
Science is clearly wrong.
Math is broken.
I feel enlightened.

So how exactly do you "change the settings" to mess with how the calculator does arithmetic?

I don't see that option in my "mode" screen.

Just proves what I've said all along: It's a judgment call since technically it's not a well-formed expression. PEMDAS isn't a law of nature, it's a rule of thumb for figuring out what people mean when they write expressions without properly parenthesizing them.

Now anyone who disagrees with me is officially calling a well-established mathematical authority (namely, a $100 graphing calculator) a liar.

Some calculators have implied multiplication built in.

Implied multiplication isn't an order of operation.

<--- THIS is the only calculator anyone should ever buy.

Solar powered
Lets you enter expressions as you would write them (like a graphing calculator does)
Costs $10

If you need anything more advanced, you should be using Mathematica or something. Paying $150 for a clunky, handheld device with the power, memory, and graphics capabilities of an Apple IIe in 2011 is retarded.

48/2(9+3) isn't a strictly grammatically correct mathematical expression. It should either be

(48)/((2)*((9)+(3)))
or
((48)/(2))*((9)+(3))

depending on the intent of the person writing it. PEMDAS is basically the analogue of that little thing in the language part of your brain that translates "I ain't never..." to "I haven't ever...". It takes something that's technically incorrect and changes it into something that makes sense.

>> No.3778522

Just tried it out on a couple of my old graphing calculators.

TI-92 says 288
TI-80 says 2

I also noticed that one of the vertical lines on the TI-80's display is out. =( Feels bad, man.

Hell yeah this ti-80 is awesome. Only barely bigger/heavier than a normal scientific calculator, but with graphing and function tables, plus programming. It makes all the other TI calculators look and feel so clunky and heavy by comparison.

AND 7K OF MEMORY!

Old school, bitches.

I really don't know why they discontinued it. If they made the keypad a little less cheap-feeling and maybe made it solar (it uses watch batteries), they'd sell a crapton of them to broke calc students for $30-$40 each.

Oh, but then it'd be harder to rape everyone's wallets with $200 TI-89s.

>> No.3778594

Bet you can't play Phoenix on that TI-80 though

>> No.3778602

>>3778585
Actually, my TI-89 "only" cost $140 when I bought it back in 1999. It got its fair share of use during my first few years of college. In fact, I used it just last month to find something at the tail end of the standard normal.

>> No.3778608

>>3778594
You would be correct, sir.

No native assembly support, and no link port, so you couldn't hack it like a TI85.

The picture above isn't shopped, its just from odd code. As you can see brackets fix the problem. I whipped out my old TI-85 to test this one out.

I prefer spending the 120 on a DS with flashcard and using a Ti-83+ emulator or 85. Now it's back lit, better looking screen, and has a 'speed up' button included as well as easily rechargeable.

Also, you can play GBA and GB games on it... there's also DS games, but most of those suck anyway, but yeah you can play the 5 good ones.
