Can /sci/ give me some quick career advice? I know this isn't strictly science or math, but this is the best place I can think of to ask without having to sign up and wait days for a reply.

Basically, I was always interested in doing Astronomy, and have been for the past semester and a bit at a University, however while I still enjoy it, the academic setting just isn't doing it for me. I'm thinking of going for something else. Doing a Tafe course for a year and having some time to relax.

Specifically, a Diploma in Accounting. Are the jobs in this area good and will a diploma be enough to go far with accounting? I'm not looking for astronomical pay, but just enough to live comfortably and one day own a nice house. Maybe $50-60k a year?

Or, should I stick at Astronomy? My grades are quite good and I'm pretty much assured to get into Honours year, but I've just lost the lust for working in the field. I think I'd much prefer to stick to being an amateur astronomer and doing 6-7 years of study to get average pay in a field I don't really want to be in seems ridiculous.

Sage bomb/report if you think I'm too far off topic, I won't mind, I could just really use some advice.

What's your idea of doing astronomy?

Use the 120k+ a year you'll be making on a hobby

Probably best to try to find a non-academic path for astronomy.

I've been an amateur stargazer for a few years and I'm pretty happy to just leave it at that. Even then, I don't go out as much as I used to.

I did actually consider this back in year 11/12, but you have to be away from home a lot and I'm not sure what the requirements are. Could you fill me in on the specifics? I'm reasonably fit and have no medical issues, what are the experience/academic requirements?

>>3703509
My ultimate goal was pretty vague, I just wanted to be in the subject. A part of the reason I'm hesitant to continue with it.

Most mining jobs are fly in fly out, you'll be working 12 hours a day for 2 weeks then fly home for a week. Don't quote me on that though

You will after doing mining.

So you only work 2 thirds of a year for 120k? I find that a little hard to believe. I'm assuming the guy from up above is a manager or something?

Hell no, I don't even have the job. But yes, you work for around 8 months out of the year

Don't you need a University degree to be an accountant in Australia?
