I've been stuck in a fundamentalist, southern, american, life style my whole life not just religiously but in ever definition of the word and I have always felt like I was the only one who could actually think about other things then beer and football. So I was wondering what would the best way to learn the metric system and leave the flawed imperial system, the one I have known my entire life, behind?

Just remember that everything in the metric system is a power of ten to a certain power of everything else.

mm->cm->m->km->etc
(I missed a few in there like hecto, but whatever)
