Writing it as 1-4 subliminally suggests subtraction, and 4-1 = 3, so you're going to get mainly threes.

There's a similar trick where you ask someone a bunch of easy, rapid-fire addition and subtraction questions just to get their subconscious occupied with adding and subtracting. Then you quickly ask them to choose a number between 5 and 12. You'll get like 80% of people to pick 7. So before you do the trick, you already have 7 written down on a piece of paper. 8 or 9 times out of 10, you look like a magician.
