yet, not really... but a girl can try.

Can /sci/ recommend some great books on astrophysics, relativistic astrophysics, and cosmology?

Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia", but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never reveal your gender on 4chan"! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

It all starts with math.

The more math you know, the more intuitive the sciences you hope to study will be. If you seriously want to self-study, a lot of discipline is involved, and it's an arduous process-- you'll have a lot of steps to go through first before you'd even start on astrophysics.

IF you've already got a healthy working understanding of mathematics and basic physics (comparable, at least, to the first two/three years of classes you'd take in an undergrad science program), but just want to transition into astrophysics, I'd start with this (or rather, I DID start with this): http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=fundamentals+of+astrodynamics&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm
=shop&cid=16674224650531437516&sa=X&ei=Ij1cTpz0KeeEsALW5vUp&ved=0CGcQ8wIwAg

It's not purely astrophysics, it's astrodynamics, but it gave me a pretty strong mathematical understanding of the concepts.

Most 4chan off of the major 'girly' boards such as /adv/, /mu/, /lit/, /cgl/ etc act very unfavourably to women making it known. They feel that the person is trying to get special treatment, regardless of their original intent. In any case remaining quiet about one's gender on /sci/ is the best bet, especially considering the EK fiasco.

I like its antiquity, it was while the apollo program was still in progress. I found it really insightful for that reason, but I s'pose it's not always practical. Surprisingly, not much has changed since then, though. Not that you'd be learning in intro books.

I might suggest checking what the required texts are for some astrophysics courses at local universities (or any university) and just getting that textbook. It's probably available in PDF form somewhere for free, most textbooks are.

Probably not a real helpful answer, but I'm on my way out and havn't the time to look thoroughly.

And OP, despite the fact that we'll never meet and fall in love and have beautiful nights under the stars talking about the minds behind our favorite astronomers and physicists,

It's best you learn the fundamentals of physics while reading a simple astronomy textbook in the spare time (the key part at the beginning is physics)

go to library.nu and search for books, read and do some problems while also watching khan academy videos.

Once you have a basic understanding of fundamental physics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, etc. You can really explore the astronomy and apply your new knowledge in physics to astronomy.

The thing is, if you were to pursue this in college you'd normally have to get your BSc in physics, masters in physics, then PhD in astromony or astrophysics (they're practically the same)

female..genes...falling...for..trap...

ok, so I have just the basics of physics down, do you think I should jump into the mathematical angle first or the theoretical? Or they need to be learned side by side?

Don't jump into theoretical until you understand the mathematics behind all of fundamental physics.

Now, hopefully you're good in calculus because that's the commonly used math when doing physics (though first year physics in college mostly use algebraic formulas).

Now of course you'll have basic algebraic formulas for simple things, but once you get deep into you'll see that you'll require some skill in calculus

why can't you go to a university or even a college? Perhaps we can meet and i'll just help you with your student loans while in the mean time we can go to the park sharing our pistachio nut ice cream and ruminating over the countless possibilities that lie beyond us in this vast and ever so beautiful cosmos. Just a thought, but the chances of learning astrophysics outta school is about 0. You need at least 3 years of mathematics to get a basic grasp on relativity and quantum mechanics beyond the typical "lol space-time dilation" and "zomg hiesenberrrrrrg uncertainty".

But if you want general direction, astrophysics is the study of gravity (ie. general relativity) and the strong nuclear force (quantum chromodynamics). You'll need medium understanding of the electro-weak force (unified electromagnetics and weak nuclear force).

As far as books go Brief History of Time is really epic. Hyperspace by Michio Kaku. Gravitation by Kip Thorne is a beast of a book too, but worth reading. Their a little outdated, but not by much.

Generally speaking, your fuked. Astrophysics is PHD level shit. And even those guys can barely figure out wtf their talking about. Good luck though!

I find it curious that you only mentioned males in your post and referred to astrophysicists as "those guys" implying that there aren't any women in the field.

Fuck off misogynistic prick.
