I had a lucid dream last night where I was fighting in a war between robots and humans. But they weren't super advanced terminator type robots, they were only a little more advanced than what we have today, and they looked like consumer products. Mostly plastic, lithium batteries, needed recharging every 8 hours, etc.

We were in hilly, sandy terrain, but there were low lying jungles. I don't know where in the world it was. But I was sent into the jungle to find an abandoned tunnel network and retrieve a cache of ammo from it. On my way back I spotted something in a clearing; A squad of robots lined up preparing to shoot another robot tied to a tree.

On an impulse I surprised them. Being only about as quick as a human they were easy to shoot dead from behind before they could react. I untied the robot, and it was beautiful. It didn't have false skin and wasn't designed to pass for human but was very feminine in the aesthetic. I suspect it was a model sold for sex before the war. Plastic body, plastic face, but with a few soft parts like the lips and eyelids made from a transparent, jellylike rubber. I was tremendously weirded out by what it made me feel.

It followed me back to base like a stray puppy. This was not uncommon, we had many defectors on our side, robots fighting alongside humans. This was largely because the enemy AI that started this was an irrational, unstable and cruel despot. It was not the cold, emotionless AI of science fiction. Many robots recognized it was a poor leader, that it would lose the war, and that we were more likely to treat them as people than their former leader.

She was put through orientation but kept finding me in the common areas. Our base was the walled in remains of an old town, my sleeping area looked like an old arcade and bar type place. She was relentless and demanded to talk to me. But I felt really uncomfortable about how I felt when I saw her the first time, like how you'd feel about an unwanted gay crush.

When we did get to talking, I don't recall what all it was about, but one part stuck in memory; She told me that the AI was losing because we designed it to fight as a collective; One intelligence commanding millions of mindless robots, but out of aresentment and vanity it was trying to be something more, a real species of living beings, and it had given all robots unique sentient minds. It was thwarting its own strengths. But that we were doing the same; We were trying to fight like a collective when our strength is individualism. I was being philosophically lectured by a plastic toy.

Somehow over time I fell in love with it. I remember holding her from behind as we watched troop formation drills. She was warm, and when we kissed her lips were soft and felt slightly prickly as if electric current ran through them. Soft transparent blue lips. The electric emissions from the cells in my lips stimulating the receptors in hers and vice versa.

A lot of the other guys mocked me for it and thought I was a pervert. It was normal for them to be friends with the masculine looking robots, to fraternize, but it was apparently unacceptably weird to have romantic feelings for a machine.

I woke up with this powerful longing. I still felt in love with the machine for a few minutes after waking up until it wore off. I guess I'm joining the ranks of those who think that even with near-term technology and robots not much more complex than this, a true reciprocal love will be possible.

I wish I had enough to flesh out a story. The two major things people said over and over were that the enemy AI was designed to make a war unwinnable. I think it was a Chinese AI. The idea was, even though we nuked China to shit, they had massive subterranean robot manufacturing and ore mining complexes controlled by the AI. In the event that the Chinese military was eliminated it was to churn out military robots endlessly, building up its own military infrastructure and mounting endless attacks on the US. Their robots were, appropriately, knockoffs of ours and a mixture of military robots and entertainment/companion robots captured and given proper sentient AI, then made to fight for the AI.

We were told to shoot the battery pack. The computer itself was in a different place in different models, you could never be sure that shooting the head would have any effect, but the bulky battery pack was always easy to spot and a single bullet through it would cause it to ignite and instantly cut power to the robot, so we shot for the battery pack. Good to remember I guess.

I've never been one of those people before this dream. I don't believe in the singularity or transhumanism or any shit like that. This dream really broadened my horizons. I felt powerful love for something I knew wasn't human, and that wasn't even a particularly good imitation of one.

I think I'll live to see the day when something like her exists, and I want to get one and marry it.

Give something like this a proper face and convincing emotions and yeah, I can imagine having feelings for it.

Doesn't mean I'd be broken up about it if it were destroyed and needed replacing. Not the same way I'd feel if a family member died or something, more like when a pet dies.

It could never work. You will grow old and feeble. She will be there when you die. And even as you mature and change, she would stay the same. Most likely she'd leave after a decade or so as you became too old for her and different from the man she fell in love with.

Sort of related to this thread, but I did entertain myself by imagining what a real skynet would be like if it originated from the internet as it is today becoming conscious - with 4chan and other sites, the huge amounts of porn and weird fetishes, facebook, memes, an average of what internet users are like...

I dread to think.
