Hello /sci/.
I've been wondering. . .
There are substances more sweet then sugar right. Like glycyrrhizin is 30 times sweeter then sugar; you could substitute 1g of glycyrrhizin for 30g of sugar.
My question is, is there anything with more water then tap water? Like what would astronauts drink in space to get all the water they need, but at less space and weight? Or if it doesn't exist. is it being developed?

>> No.3591128

glycyrrhizin is used for the taste, not the nutritional value. if you need to eat 30g suger a day you cant substitute 1g glycyrrhizin

same with water, you need water. you dont drink it for the taste.

Water can not be more water. The only thing you can do to reduce volume and weight is to remove the minerals in it.

Human perception -> "sweet"
Physical substance with a molecular formula -> "water"

You can actually supplement water with more substances the body also needs to live and process water. It doesn't make water contain more water, though, but less.

how could you possibly reduce water? its only 3 molecules.

I don't see why they don't just compress water and put in in tanks, same as they do with oxygen.

step1) compress hydrogen into a tank
step2) compress oxygen into a tank
step3) combine the two to get more water than you could fit into a tank

Yeah, distilled water. It's as close to 100% water you get. Tap water always has a little amount of other substances in it.

Yes, they use dehydrated water. It's a super concentrated form of water that you just have to add water to.

i assume then that you can't substitute the role of water in the body with some other substance?

i don't know a shit about science but it seems like a reasonable question, at least to the uninformed

Water, as a fluid, is incompressible. It's biological value is as an inert solvent, so the amount is crucial. I don't know of any substitute, but suppose it's possible.

We actually need the minerals in the water to take it in as a isotonic fluid, distilled water is hypotonic, causing cells to burst.
