I know a guy who writes code for Matlab. He has a PhD and barely make 150k. Most of it from being a tenured professor/chair.

Also, why do you need math for Artificial Intelligence? There's maybe only a handful of AI sub fields that require serious math and its usually so specialized that you just learn it as you need it.
