hello, /sci/
i come bearing research
i went on omegle, went into spy mode, and asked 50 people a simple question
is the sun on fire?
my results were as follows

yes- 14
no- 24
i don't know- 12

only 48% of the people who i asked were right

my results show one thing and one thing only
PEOPLE ARE FUCKING STUPID
NOT KNOWING SOMETHING SIMPLE LIKE THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS
DO THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF HOW FIRE, SPACE, OR THE SUN WORKS?

however, this raises another question
why?
why are people so stupid?
what is going so horribly wrong that people don't know the answer to such a simple question?
what are we doing wrong? how can we improve?

what is our world coming to?

50 isn't really that good of a sample size to be making such strong conclusions there mate.

>> No.3530544

Your question is a pretty poor test for intelligence. If you want to draw the conclusion that people are stupid you should at least ask a logic/reasoning question. Not a question predicated by a lack of somewhat esoteric knowledge (fusion).

exactly. the question tests knowledge, not intellect.

wait, how do you define fire?
not trolling

well people should also realize that not everyone has studied the extinguishing effect of a total vacuum on flame.

maybe you should be asked about the latest NFL draft, or whoever Lady gaga is dating? you might find you're the retard, given the questions. it's all relative. truth be told, knowing that the sun isn't on fire hasn't gotten me anywhere in life. hasn't made me a penny, hasn't caused me to learn other info that proved useful, hasn't gotten me laid or made me healthy.

Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products.

Note combustion. Ergo electromagnetic radiation from fusion doesn't constitute fire.

I was thinking of fire as plasma so I would have said yes to OP, anyways 2/10 for effort

I'm not saying that it is esoteric knowledge that combustion requires oxygen. I'm just saying that the fact that sun is undergoing fusion and not simply a ball of fire is somewhat unknown to most people. Its possible they think it is a sphere of oxygen/hydrocarbons that is undergoing combustion on the surface. Obviously its pretty nonsensical but most people I suspect don't know about fusion and probably don't know what else it could be other than fire.

Let me ask you this question.

who was the highest scoring player in the champion league in 2010?

i bet nobody here knows the answer yet many people who are interested in sports will know the answer.

what makes your knowledge that the sun is not on fire more intrinsically valuable than the any other knowledge people might posses.

your own arrogance just highlights your ignorance. If you were really as intelligent as you believe yourself to be then you would know that by expanding the shores of our knowledge we are but increasing the ocean of our ignorance.

The only thing I know is that I know nothing.

No op, the only thing your results show is that you know nothing at all about statistics or taking surveys.

Yes.

Yes.

Instead of acting as if this is completely new, or as if the people are themselves at fault, target the bad education they've had to reach their conclusions.
