3517501 No.3517501 [Reply] [Original]

Global scientific consensus agrees: global warming is happening and is accelerating because of man

The world is obviously too busy worrying about politics and money, as usual. By the time we get around to actually putting some effort in, it will be too late for anything other than radical changes in first world lifestyles.

ITT: Radical changes to stop global warming, or at least slow it down

Here is what I propose:
1. Make private transportation illegal in large cities. Public transportation and medical services exempt. Open freeways to bicycles.

2. Cap airline travel per person.
3. Adopt solar, wind, and algae as power sources

>> No.3517506

However, oil is not the only source of carbon emissions.

>> No.3517587

public transportation would have to be drastically expanded for this to work.

also, public transportation gets its energy from SOMEWHERE.

so long as the source is oil or coal plants there will be pollution.

If you've been to tehran the industrial air pollution is so noxious its downright poisonous in some places, people have to drive wearing face masks.

this is why nuclear power is such an important solution for us.

And natural gas is the leading source of CO2 emissions.

as a whole, the industry is by far the leading source of greenhouse gas, as it also spews boat loads of CH4 and H2O in the atmosphere.

both of those are about 10-20x worse than CO2 as greenhouse gasses, waayyyyyyyyyyy more persistant, and essentially impossible to remove.

1. Using a bike still requires a large amount of work, thus creating a VAST demand for food, because, you know, people need for for energy
2.lolwut?
3.Solar- Technology no where near the level we need to become dependent on it, Wind- Useful for local energy needs, but in a city or even a town, its completely useless, Algae- Derp method because it takes CO2 in and once we harvest the bio fuel, the CO2 is released back into the atmosphere

And i hope you realize, 99.883% of the CO2 we humans have been putting into the atmosphere, has been here since, i dunno, the earth was made? You exhale CO2, maybe we should make breathing illegal?

To replace all natural gas and oil producing electricity, we would need something like 5,000 full-size nuclear power plants. It doesn't matter if they run on U235 or thorium, you would need so many plants that it becomes impractical. It is not a realistic solution. Nuclear is only a supplemental energy source, like wind and solar, and will always be a secondary source because it doens't produce huge amounts of power like natural gas and oil does.

>Make private transportation illegal in large cities.
This is utterly retarded completely unfeasible. Not every city has the public transportation infrastructure of say New York or large European cities and even if they did its not sufficient to completely replace cars.
A much better idea would be to drastically increase mileage standards to around 50mpg and increase investment into plug in electrics and diesel-electric vehicles.

Public transport is way more energy efficient. With emptier roads it will be much faster reliable and has more users = bigger budget.

I mean seriously if European towns/cities have their public transport sorted out very well (unless they are so small that you can cross them by walk in 15 minutes if you are not 250kg fat reservoir) then it shouldn't be a major problem anyway.

Only exception that I know of with truly shitty transport is London. So fucking rubbish especially the underground system.
