If it really were a failed nation you wouldn't be so fucking butthurt. Like the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

What? You've never heard of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau? Huh, I wonder why.

Just don't go to Mars. Also, don't try to disprove what I just said back there. Please. God doesn't like that, either... Yeah.

Oh, you're not being an ass. I apologize then. Honestly, I agree, my statement is usually only a response to someone saying something to the effect of "Man's not meant to live in Space". It's not meant to be used as the basis of a logical argument.

there are air-breathers OTHER than ramjets. and he gave a big shpeel about nuclear being crap and air-breathers being infeasible. the point is he doesn't know what works.

Well, that was nice.

I'd have liked to see Franklin Chang Diaz (from the Ad Astra Rocket Company) on the space propulsion talk, would've been a nice follow-up to all those nuclear/electric propulsion questions.

>> No.3491009

>>3490852
There's not really anything else that's efficient enough to be worthwhile at useful launch speeds.

Mind you, that doesn't mean they have no place on an orbital shuttle. Plenty of space shuttle proposed designs had jet engines for takeoff, landing, and atmospheric flight. They would detract from launch energy efficiency, but also make launches much safer and more convenient, and reduce stress and maintenance costs: a good trade-off for a craft meant primarily for shuttling human beings between the Earth's surface and LEO.

The space shuttle got really fucked up with military requirements for huge payloads. There were a lot of good ideas before it got compromised into such a disaster.
