is this match correct?

what is the correct answer and which one is wrong?

>> No.3471009

20 is correct. Sawing a board into 2 pieces takes only one cut, whereas sawing it into 3 pieces takes two cuts.

>> No.3471012 [DELETED]

>>3470997
Keyword here is "another". 15 is correct.

>> No.3471011

it takes two cuts to make three pieces. If one cut takes 10 minutes, then to make three pieces would take 20 minutes.

>> No.3471016

>>3470997
The answer the person put down and got marked down for is right.

>> No.3471020

the thought process was this from the teacher:

2 pieces FROM a board, not the whole board

>> No.3471028

According to the teacher, sawing the board into one piece would take five minutes.

Guess which answer is correct.

>> No.3471051

2 pieces 10 minutes.
2*x=10
px=T where
x ≙ time/piece
a ≙ number of pieces
b ≙ total Time

solve for x => x=5.
Now the time per piece is 5 and we want "T" for an a=3
so: 3*5=T=15
Solved!

>> No.3471073

>>3471051
The time is per cut not per piece. You'll always need to make one less cut than the number of pieces.

>> No.3471098

Why is this argued about?

This is some babby's first proportion test. The teacher is right.

>> No.3471102

The teacher is retarded.

>> No.3471105

>sawing in 2 pieces:1 cut
>in 3 pieces:2 cuts

I'm fucking sure OP is the same guy that posted the "a game costs 1 dollar+half it's price" thread

>> No.3471106

>>3471073

But the question asked refered to the number of pieces not the number of cuts.
(That was actually meant as a trolling attempt; b=T)
But what >>3471020 said is correct.
The Answer given by the Tested is correct for the assumption that the first cut makes 2 pieces
The Answer by the Tester makes the assumption that the first cut makes 1 piece and you make another cut to create the 2nd.

>> No.3471134

It's a shitty question that punishes you for thinking critically.

>> No.3471136

>>3471020
>>3471020

But that's not the correct thought process if you read the question.

"It took Marie 10 minutes to saw A BOARD into 2 pieces"

- Marie picks a singular board up from the ground, and cuts it into 2 pieces, requiring one cut in between the ends.

"how long to saw another board into 3 pieces?"

- Marie picks up a completely different board off the ground and saws it into three pieces by making two cuts between the ends of the board.

cut = 10 min
2 x cut = 20 min

The teacher is fucking wrong.

I fucking hate questions like this that betray common sense. I got one question once:

Mary enters an elevator on the 1st floor.
She goes 10 floors up.
After that, she goes 4 floors down.

I answered 7, but the teacher's answer from the solution manual was 6. FUCKING RAGE.

>> No.3471177

>>3471164

Herp derp, whoever wrote that question probably meant ground floor not first floor.

In the American floor-naming convention the ground floor is the first floor.

a= starting floor
b= number of floors ascended
c= number of floors descended
d= ending floor
a + b - c = d
1 + 10 - 4 = 7

LOL MATH IS HARD

There's a convention for floor naming? Where does it meet?

>> No.3471254

your teacher is a fucking idiot

2 pieces = 1 cut = 10 minutes
3 pieces = 2 cuts = 20 minutes, since time is for cuts and not pieces made.

Not true. I live in the US dumbfuck. I've lived in two buildings that the main lobby was on the ground floor.
