I wasn't sure if I should post this in /sci/ or /x/, but I thought the people in here would appreciate it more. I finished reading "Towards a Psychocivilized Society", and the author is a brain researcher. He is incredibly flamboyant, flaunting his research as, and these are his words, not mine, "A tool that we may use make a happier, more intelligent Man, and more free!" He goes on to say, "Are you free today? No! You are held back by your family, your passions, by the government."

Thus, he published hundreds of academic papers detailing electrical stimulation of thebrain with crude methods back in the sixties. He is now 96, and I wrote him a letter. He wrote back, and here are the scans. Someone may want to submit this to the Archives, because it is going to be good....

This is his response letter. Very short and to the point. From what I have read, he doesn't like to talk about anything personal. He is emotionally disturbed, or so the New York Times said back in his five minutes in the spotlight in the 1970s. I am going to post the lectures he sent me. The first is direct, hands-on material. Then he gets philosophical. Just read on: What follows is a dark, coldhearted account of animals fitted with helmets for the rest of their lives, with wires running out in all directions, and he tested humans, as well, which is the subject of this paper. More people need to know of this man and his beautiful research....

This is the first lecture. There has been much conspiracy theory surrounding him concerning possible involvement with the CIA and US Government (MKULTRA), which he wholeheartedly denies. He doesnt say he has never heard of it, and even admits many of his fellow academics were involved! I will let you decide.

This lecture doesn't seem very technical. More like "We can do some mind control by electrically stimulating parts of the brain" than "according to regression testing on six separate samples we have determined with P > .7 that" &c. Nothing too hard for someone who knows to write in full sentences.

In fact I'd really like to know more about the context of this talk - intended audience and date especially - for that reason.

Yes, he used the miniature radio tube female connectors, but eventually advanced to subdermal implants. They could operate without batteries, by madnetic inductive coupling, and were implanted in the abdominal cavidy, much like a pacemaker [in fact, Delgado designed an early version of the pacemaker]. The electrodes ran under the skin into the brain through a tiny hole and secured with dental cement, remaining there for the animals life.

Posting page 3 of lecture 2.

It isnt exactly metaphysics. Have you ever read Nineteen Eighty-Four? It is sort of like the interviewer to Winston, who convinces him that whatever his brain tells him, it is true, reguardless of whether or not he is hallucination. Delgado only got into philosophy in his eighties when, I guess, his hands became too shaky to implant the wires and miniature radio tube sockets. Lol.

Seriously. It stopped being funny a while ago. From reading physiologists and psychologists (Such as BF Skinner) I have learned that giving a group complete and total anonymity encourages hedonistic responses. It is, in the words of Edward Griffin, "A mass orgy." But what happens when that orgy is over? What happens when you have indulged yourselves to capacity? Then the controllers come in (I wont necesarrily call them 'bad guys'). This time theyre after real power. The same happened to the Mayans. They were weakened by war, and the hedonistic society which followed. When the Spaniards came, it was only a matter of time before they were defeated.

You may think that your role is minute or insignificant, but you are not entitled to think that. See the experiments by Solomon Asch on group conformity, and the ones by Stanley Milgrim, who confirmed that 70% of average Americans, from those who were professors, to those who lacked a high school eduication, were willing to kill a man in cold blood. To be fair, there were two guidelines that were needed: 1) Anonymity. The subjects thought that they wouldnt be blamed. 2) The ability to pass the blame to an authority figure. Whatever small role you play in the larger social collective Anonymous is bigger than you may think. Wake up.

Great link! Ill check it out... I have always wondered if it would be possible to create some sort of groupthink virus circulating /b/, and maybe even assassinate a senator or two... Do you think it would be a reasonable goal, provided you followed the lessons of Stanley Milgrim, and Solomon Asch? I mean, if everyone in the country suddenly appears to want to kill a senator, then is it a bad thing?

I don't even understand how that guy is trolling. How disruptive is posting Costanza pictures... who cares? Lol.

I just can't figure out why he's wasting time. Not that lulz-worthy. Unless the OP is really butthurt about some guy posting pictures to cap the image limit. You can always make another thread?

What is so disruptive about this so called "troll?"

Jose M. R. Delgado, a pioneer in brain-implant technology, is perhaps most
famous for halting a charging bull by merely pressing a button on a device that
sent signals to the animal’s brain.
■ In the early 1970s Delgado went from being acclaimed to being criticized. In
1974 he moved from the U.S. to Spain and then gradually faded from public
consciousness and the citation lists of neuroscientists.
■ His accomplishments, however, helped to pave the way for modern brain-implant
technology, which is enjoying a resurgence today and is improving life for patients
with epilepsy and such movement disorders as Parkinson’s and dystonia.
■ Delgado, now 90, recently returned to the U.S., complete with strong opinions
on the promise and perils of the ongoing work.

If you are not interested in the given topic enough just to find out more (regardless of who finds it out, you or someone else), then you shouldn't really be a scientist. There are plenty of egomaniacs in science, though. But not many of them get very far (with exceptions like the ambitious Jim Watson).

>>In one demonstration, which explored the effects of stimulation on social hierarchy, he implanted a stimoceiver in a macaque bully.
He then installed a lever in the cage that,
when pressed, pacified the bully by causing the stimoceiver to stimulate the monkey’s caudate nucleus, a brain region involved in controlling voluntary movements. A female in the cage soon
discovered the lever’s power and yanked
it whenever the male threatened her. Delgado, who never shied from anthropomorphic interpretations, wrote, “The old dream of an individual overpowering the strength of a dictator by remote control has been fulfilled, at least in our
monkey colonies.”
