So, fa/sci/sts,
I've got a chance to go to uni and study history or philosophy, but I'm kinda torn between them.
If you were in my position, what would you do and why? What would make one superior to the other?

History. Philosophy profs get butthurt over disagreements with their interpretation - and get away with it because philosophy is interpretation. History has some absolutes that only the cranks (see Northwestern University...) can argue with - it happened. If you're really stuck, do History of Philosophy.

Yeah Op learning facts is so amazing and fascinating and interesting!
No actual thinking is involved, all you have to do is memorize, memorize and memorize!
Who cares if you cant think for yourself, at least you have a lot of chronologically irrelevant facts!

Assuming you didn't learn for yourself in the first place? It might widen your view on the world, but in the end it's not like you can really do anything with Philosophy most of the time. Sure there are those who land jobs, but you should have learned to think for yourself without having to choose a study that does that for you.

I've just finished my History degree (from a good UK uni), and I loved it.

Shit job prospects though unless you want to go into teaching, but then I guess it's slightly more useful than philosophy in that respect.
