You mean the default state of being? Yeah you could say that its "popular". You were once one too until somebody whispered nonsense into your ear and you trusted them.

Which is sort've why the church went around lopping off heads of non-believers, so we dont actually know who was or was not an atheist, as most rational people are not suicidal and would not wish to have incurred the wrath of the barbaric religions they were oppressed by.

I don't understand why you typecase atheists as teenagers trying to be edgy. It isn't edgy, hasn't been for some time. And I'm 30, not a teenager. Most of the atheists on this board, I'd wager, are in that age range.

It's a valid worldview consonant with the available evidence. Can't you just let us have that without trying to smear it with shit at every opportunity?

He lived in an era when you had to pretend to be religious. In public statements he said stuff like that, but in private letters he was openly atheistic.

I agree this argument's retarded. You're seeing what you want to see and ignoring the context.

So the question is, was Einstein the sort of person who would speak in religious platitudes in a time of war in order not to ruffle any feathers?

I think that sounds a great deal like him. He said many times in private that even subtle conceptions of god were myths and products of human weakness, but in public statements he went out of his way to employ religious language.

I agree he used religious rhetoric to get his points across. I would never dispute that. When talking about the developing field of quantum mechanics, he said, "God does not play dice." He clearly meant it metaphorically. And yes, he did bash organized religion and theology quite often. But the point is that deism and theism are quite different from one another, and I've never seen evidence of him bashing deism.

You quote him as saying, "No interpretation no matter how subtle..." In context, it's quite clear that this quote is referring to the Bible, and thus Christian theology. He was talking about interpretations of the Bible, not the interpretations of god.

It should be noted that I'm not a deist myself. I'm not simply "seeing what I want to see". I have no preference as to what Einstein's religious beliefs were. All I'm concerned with are facts, and the facts point to a deistic worldview.
