How genetic is intelligence?

inb4 'how could you ask that, such a stupid question'.

I'm not very sciencey. I'd like a full on explanation though please.

Actually, it's something closer to "Once an idiot, never a genius."

How genetic are emotions?

Fairly genetic actually...

How else would you explain the uniformity throughout the entire human species?

but through training it's possible to raise your IQ right?

genetics determines what it is initially, and environment doesn't really play a role, but through certain training (puzzles for an hour every day) it can be raised?

i ask because my IQ is probably 100-110. but i don't want to be average. i want to be able to comprehend and process information quickly.

Yes you can train yourself to get a higher IQ,but IQ is bullshit.

Also, yes intelligence has genetic factors. But environment is a bigger factor. You can have perfect genetics, but raised by idiots, and will be an idiot. you might be smarter than other idiots you share your culture with, but a person with bad genetics and good environment will still beat you.

Anybody who says, genetic factor is bigger than environment , is a retard.

IQ is a notoriously simple way of deriving intelligence. It usually just measures calculation and visual capacity.

Not to say that it's not a valuable way of determining some parts of intelligence, but it's not the final word.

You can still increase your intellect through study.

>Also, yes intelligence has genetic factors. But environment is a bigger factor

I disagree and agree. It can go either way, but it depends on the difference between the people you are studying to make such an assessment.

Genetics literally structure how your brain works. To write that off is quite ignorant.

>>3446490
I've heard something more like genetics determines your maximum and minimum potential and how easily you would improve intelligence and environment effects how close to your maximum potential you get, but I'm probably completely wrong. Also intelligence isn't a constant, it changes in both directions through out your life.

I'm probably totally wrong though.

Its just like bodybuilding actually.
If you workout, you get better. If you dont you dont get better.
Genetics is huuuuugee factor in bodybuilding.Intelligence is just like that.
Also,i seriously dont know why are people obsessed with intelligence. You dont need to have 140+ iq to do science. There are many smart people who are just "retards" in my opinion.
This whole IQ thing is like penis size..

my fascination with it is an emotional one. i respect intelligent people. the higher my IQ the faster i can attain information and be like them.

but even if a motorboat would get me across the atlantic faster, a rowboat can too.

>>3446519
It doesnt determine your maximum or mininum. It determines your starting point, and how fast you can improve.
You cant measure your intelligence with IQ,so we dont really know maximum. But i know, that you can study IQ tests like studying calculus, organic chem etc. and get over 140 points. And write a "self-improvement" book and get rich. Some people still do that...

Iq is not bullshit, but it is wrong.

>causes miniature faecal deluges

My IQ is 130.

>> No.3446590

Well the good thing is,being average is always good. Most of the scientist have average or just above average intelligence, but they work really really really hard(there are exceptions, dont fucking call names like gauss ,da vinci etc, iq wasnt invented back then). And einstein never took an iq test. Feynman had above average iq..
If i were really gifted, like 140+ IQ and still wasting my time on posting on /sci/,i would be ashamed of myself.

Opening wikipedia is not that goddamn hard...

>Estimates in the academic research of the heritability of IQ have varied from below 0.5[2] to a high of 0.9.[5] A 1996 statement by the American Psychological Association gave about .45 for children and about .75 during and after adolescence.[6] A 2004 meta-analysis of reports in Current Directions in Psychological Science gave an overall estimate of around .85 for 18-year-olds and older.[7]
