Why is the US not on the metric system? I don't know much about the metric system what made us not want to use it?

Patriotism.
"Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism — how passionately I hate them!" - Albert Einstein

We're too set in our ways and it makes way too much sense.

I live in the US and have always thought that the fact that we don't use the metric system to be pretty fucking stupid.

As for why, I really couldn't tell you. Our education system and the rampant rejection of science is probably largely to blame.

>> No.3430633

It did not exist when our country began, and particularly when we started building much of our massive manufacturing infrastructure.. So inertia basically. What system of measure we use is largely irrelevant though, I mean, we went to the fucking Moon just fine using shit measured in fractions of an inch.

Then why do they teach the metric system?
OP, pretty simple. It's pride.

I live in the US and have OFTEN felt that the fact that we don't use the metric system here is pretty fucking stupid.

As for why, I really couldn't tell you. Our education system and the rampant rejection of science is probably largely to blame.

If anything, the US should use the metric system as a symbol of their independence from Britain and it's imperial system.

what?

>> No.3430666

look at everything in america that uses the imperial system. so much fucking stuff. and most people here are used to the system. changing it would be a nightmarish task. they actually tried to switch over to metric in the 50s. mass confusion erupted. we just use the imperial system too much to change over. imagine if your country had to switch from metric to imperial. exactly the same situation

We've gotten over that if you couldn't tell.

>> No.3430717

We do use the Metric system everywhere it is superior. Namely the sciences, you can't find anyone with a degree in any field of science that doesn't know metric.

But the general populace can't use it because they have no reason to. It doesn't give them any benefit to change, so they resist it. It's just much, much easier for all parties involved to just teach children the basics, and teach anyone who is going to need it the whole system later in life.

Habit. Plus a lot of metric measures are kind of retarded for every day use. It is a know fact that people are better able to comprehend numbers which are divisible by 4. We like to talk in terms of quarters of things, which is why pounds are 16 ounces, there are 12 inches in a foot. All numbers divisible by 4.

metric countries cant even agree... make a metric japanese bolt fit a metric german nut... let me know how that works out for ya.

metric steel sections: a 200 x 200 x 12 square tube; put a tape on it, it measures 208 x 208 x 12.7. which is, guess what? 8" x 8" x 1/2".

Pa is the SI unit for pressure, so why do i see specifications listing pressure in N/cm^2?? dont make me figure out the conversion, just give me the number we all "agreed" to use....

Because the metric system is the devil and the hicks in your country will be scared of something different.

Also, Because the USA is all like "Na-uh, we aint gon conform to no stinkin Limeys, it's against the constitution."

Pic VERY related.
