Hey /sci/, something I've been kind of wondering. The idea that if time travel were to occur, any changes would result in diverging timelines is widely accepted as fact

I was just curious if it was based on some larger theory, and if so could someone point me in the right direction, or if it just makes the most sense to the majority of people?
