Ah you have trouble with negative exponents. Well I did too so it's no big deal. I'd suggest you make a new thread if after this you don't understand.
1/10 = 10^-1 because any number (that is not zero) to the power of negative one produces it's reciprocal. A reciprocal is basically the converse, opposite. 10.0 -> 0.01, basically. So 0.01 = 10.0^-1. It's defined that way.

If you have 10^2 its 100. Two zeros. If you have 10^1 its 10. One zero. If you have 10^0 its 1. Zero zeros. 10^-1 = 0,1. Now the zero is on the other side, see? Now a milli- is 10^-3. Thats 0,001. Milli, micro, nano, piko. They are 10^-3, 10^-6, 10^-9 and 10^-12 respectively.

You know the rules of exponents, right?

10^2 / 10^1 = 10^1. So you can describe 10^a / 10^b as 10^(a-b)

Next, take 10^0 / 10^3. We all know that 10^0 is 1, so the result is 1/10^3, or 1/1000, or .001. But if we apply the above rule, we get that it can be expressed as 10^-3, because 10^(0-3) = 10^-3. Therefore, 10^-3 must equal 1/10^3

because it gives you a nice number line if you were to make an exponential graph, for example. You go from x^1, 2, 3, 4 so it makes sense to go backwards like 1, 0, -1, -2 right?

X^-1 can be written in a different manner, 1/X^1, so X^-1=1/X. Let X be 10. 10^-3 can be written as 1/10^3, and that can then be written as 1/1000, meaning one thousandth.

It's hilarious how you faggots think math has a million axioms set by stupid mathematicians for minor convenience, when it barely has a handful.

I blame poor math teachers. But then again, if you knew math you wouldn't waste your life teaching.

protip: he didn't get it after that. So we went downwards and downwards until we just said 'it gives you a nice straight line' and called it a day.

Why even put the b in there if you're just going to replace it with an a?

I know he was kind enough to do that, but I was confused again.

>>3417771
Wait why, it's because of graphs? Why not make a little hole in there if we don't know what it equals, like with limits?

Because I was trying to be nice and restate the rule of exponents that when you have the a fraction, where both numbers have the same base and different exponents, you subtract the exponent. I expressed it as x^a / x^b = x^(a-b), but I could have said y^z / y^ñ = y^(z - ñ), for all it's worth.

The point is, x^a / x^a = x^(a-a) = x^0 = 1, but "x" and "a" can be anything, from "7" and "42" to "q" and "b"
