When will /sci/ fags learn it's not their major that makes them smart, it's their school.

MIT Econ major right here

What do you call an engineer who graduated from Caltech?

But the Caltech guy is killing it in Silicon Valley while the low tier guy is programming fart apps

Econ = BEM, lol

At least get a Bio major, pussy.

>> No.3409118

>> implying "good" schools are actually better at teaching and don't simply attract and and therefore "produce" more successful students due to a false sense of prestige

I could fill a community college with the top 0.1% of outgoing highschool students, teach them extremely poorly and still have a fantastic crop of graduates.

Intelligent people with a bachelor's education (shitty or otherwise) can educate themselves to any level with the fundamentals and a general knowledge of the field under their belt. especially in modern ties where information is so freely available

>> No.3409131

>implying one's native intelligence isn't the dominant factor in success
The only reason "education" seems correlated with success is that highly ranked schools are very selective regarding who they admit.

Those Caltech students would still kick your ass, even if they'd never seen the inside of a classroom.

>> No.3409134

>>3409099
meh, engineers get hired more on their experience (and connections). not that graduating from caltech wouldn't have any bearing--it would certainly help when it's a big name. but the low tier retards aren't totally fucked by any means.

Economics is like trying to steer a car by looking in the rear-view mirror.

You guys have NO idea what the fuck is going on, and no amount of Ivy league education can fix that.

by "math proofs" do you mean epsilon-delta type shit in standard caculus? because if you mean abstract algebra and/or real analysis (typical intro to pure math courses) then typically students don't take them until junior year. never heard of first years being taught that stuff.

You think economics majors become economists?? Hahahah being at MIT I can waltz into any Wall Street job and make 100k coming out of my freshman year.

Youre probably a butt hurt astrophysics major studying your ass off to prove youre smart to battle your inferiority complex.

>> No.3409170

This is prob a troll thread but I will give my 2 cents on the subject.

I recently graduated from a small, private, christian (GASP) university with a double biology and chemistry major. I did an REU (the highest paying one I believe (so it naturally attracted the most applicants) and was very nervous about being compared to a bunch of people from prestigous public universities. There were kids from very prestigious universities, ones that had much larger and much more respected departments than mine. I however stood out as the premier researcher (at least in the mind of the program coordinator). Sure they had a lot of laboratory experience than I and had more course requirements with more rigorous titles, but they didn't understand the big picture nearly as well as I did. I didn't have a great GPA, only have a few months laboratory experience, didn't even take the GRE subject test, and still got offered a position in the graduate department at a UC school. (I believe my interview and personal statement were key).

This is probably disjointed and poorly written but all I am attempting to convey is that a small school can produce great science students.

I see. well at my uni the way it works is that there's a series of three calculus courses required to be taken in order and you can only test out of 2 with AP. and this final course is a pre-req for any proof based class. and also a pre-req for linear algebra which is in turn a pre-req for abstract algebra. so earliest possible to take abstract algebra is sophmore year (which I did). would've loved to jump right in though..

2. In state tuition + scholarships + financial aid means I pay 2$ tuition / year

3. Economics is bad and you should feel bad;
have fun upholding mankind's silly little contrived resource management system, because it'll soon end anyway.

MIT is for fags now; admissions policy is bullshit.
