So, I'm trying to prepare for Calc I and I've hit this and I don't understand what's going on.

Sorry for the shitty picture, my phone isn't very good. All the variables are 'u's except for the very first integral.

The area in question is the u^2 that is circled. I don't understand how it became the things underlined.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Wow, you must be really smart.

>> No.3398685

The basic idea is that you just sub in the un-integrable stuff with a single variable, then at the very end you put it back in when you can integrate it. Hopefully I didn't just state something you already knew.

Do it in reverse.

unlike OP

this should help
7/5 = 1 + 2/5

u^2-4+4=u^2

I understand that, what I don't get is how my pic happened.
I have to rush through my calc book, so I skip a lot of the trig stuff, so it may have to do with that.

No trig in there. Maybe you can work some problems on wolfram alpha. I should stress that you read your chapter fully. Really scrounge every letter to pieces and read it three or four times.

>> No.3398716

they expanded u^2 to u^2-4+4 which still equals u^2

(u^2-4+4)/(u^2-4)=1+4/(u^2-4)

If you STILL dont get it,
u^2/u^2-4=(u^2-4+4)/(u^2-4)=(u^2-4)/(u^2-4)+4/(u^2-4)=1+4/(u^2-4)

I guess that's impressive that you know more than me in a subject when you're in a higher level of education. You should feel very proud of yourself.

You must really be buttmad. Not homework or underage. If you noticed it's actually summer right now(no school, if you also didn't know) and I never mentioned my age, so you must be pretty bad at reading if you think I did.

Shut the hell up already, both of you idiots.

CC kid, YOU made the mistake of assuming OP must either be in college OR high school. That's a logical fallacy.

Other anon, you allowed cc kid to pull you into this argument instead of ignoring him.

Let's learn from this and move on shall we?

I wish you all had better parents sometimes.

It's really not obvious.

Just look at your substitution equalities and play around with em.
