3390705 No.3390705 [Reply] [Original]

If you'll recall, /sci/'s undersea base included a space launch facility, and the capability to manufacture a launch vehicle that is essentially a modernized Saturn V.

This aroused the concern of the US and the anger of China. More recently a spy managed to secure samples of the red crystal that made many of our advanced technologies possible. This has provoked many attempts since then to steal more of it, and it may yet come to hostilities.

So, we must go to space. Weeks ago, /sci/lab sent up a VASIMR powered tug, which has returned an asteroid from the asteroid belt to Earth orbit. In a series of launches since then, we have affixed an inflatable habitat module to the asteroid as well as a total of four entry points to which additional inflatable modules can be docked. (Standardized docking tunnels and junctions are provided in the image for copying/pasting)

The longterm plan is to harvest ore from the asteroid and build a modest self sufficient space colony, with a shipyard where a larger vessel will be constructed for our journeys further into space. Let us conquer this new frontier, just as we conquered the sea.

>> No.3390725

Humble requests follow:

1. Be patient. I'll be integrating everyone's additions into the image as the thread progresses. It's a lot of work and I'm one dude. I'll do my best of course. :3

2. Put serious effort into your module. There's only room for so many, each one should be unique and interesting to look at with nice detail and a clear purpose.

3. Don't carve out more space inside the asteroid than you need, if you plan to put your addition there. It can't fit too many and lots of people will want to build something there.

With that said, let's settle low earth orbit like a boss.

Mad Scientist, I tell you this as often as a can. You're a bro of the highest caliber. Keep doing what you're doing. Unfortunately I don't have time to actually craft anything for this, but a lab in which to test the various properties of our red crystals is a must. Certainly there would be interesting experiments we could perform that would be impossible on earth.

Is this a quest thread... on /sci/?

We should move all red crystals and research materials in a module to be attached to the main habitation module aboard the asteroid. By keeping our stuff out of reach, we negate most security needs.

I am running out of words as to how for this I am.

We need a group of space based special forces just in case of problems with ground-based adversaries.(Pic related) Also, some kind of laser based Anti-missile defence.

The shipyard should include robotic factory arms, and the ship should be self-sufficient, in that it can create modules and ammunition itself with on-board factories in a similar manner.

We need some kind of return-to-sender way of moving resources back down from orbit to sell on the open market to fund several of these ideas. I would also suggest a large square kilometer solar array to gather energy from the sun to power the thing.

I would almost suggest moving it to L0 or L1, it's far enough out from earth that we would have a lot of warning for any incoming objects, and we could remain in sunlight 24/7.

It's a community project, everyone adds their own module to this space station. Just don't make it too big, keep the art quality reasonably high and make the aesthetic fit in with everything else (same shaped module, same wall thickness, same scale, etc.)

In the end, we'll have a sprawling space complex that will be fuckawesome to look at. Which is how our seabase ended up, seen here: >>3390831

Well judging by the number of beds in the sea base, there are 42 of us. And judging by how many stick dudes were in the original module, each rocket's crew capsule carries only two people. That's going to be 21 launches just for crew transport.

I'd like to see people specify how many launches their module required, to keep things somewhat semirealistic.

How are our long-term life support systems doing? I believe building an extra module devoted to the manufacture of vitals (1) and maybe lines running just under the surface of the asteroid providing backup crucial resources to the other modules.

(1) Vitals include breathable air, electricity, etc
Oxygen can be manufactured from electrolysis of water.
Hydrogen is also collected from above electrolysis. Might be useful for fuel.
Electricity would most probably come from solar panels (I suggest perhaps every module should sport these panels to maximise useable energy.)

well i drew it out. I dont think it came out too well but what you are looking at is benches for upper arm workouts. since we're dealing with almost no gravity, conventional workrooms are obviously obsolete. so we have the bars hooked up to elastic bands that you can adjust the level of resistance. the black band is a strap to hold you into the bench. those are the red beds.

The yellow beds are for ab and lower body workouts. the gray bands are meant for you to hook your arms and legs into, providing rigidness and to stay on. either the bottom or the top moves out and up, meaning you can do leg raises or sit ups. they too are attached to the same kind of elastic bands that you may adjust the resistance of. the benches are held off the wall and the bands are attached to a small machine underneath of them in order to provide the correct resistance.

The yellow and gray objects are treadmills. since its hard to gain any resistance in this environment the treadmills i had to be creative with these. The surface of the treadmill is interwoven with magnetic strands and the runner is given a set of magnet footies to slip on the underside of whatever they happen to be wearing on their feet. in order to make sure that the runner doesn't just push off harder than the footies can pull him back down, a strap is affixed to each shoulder. the strap will have enough play to not wear out the runner's arm and have enough slack in the connective material to the treadmill as to not cause any injury should the wearer cause some form of accident. the side control mechanism that you see controls the strength of the magnetism and the speed of the treadmill.

In order to really expand into space we'll need to finish this modest outpost, construct the deep space vessel, and travel to the Moon. no offence intended but the size of the aperture on the telescope is way too small. it would make a crapy telescope and has no point being so big if the tube is that small, the optics are the largest part. it shouldn't be so narrow left of the boxy bit.

Also, I tried to edit the telescope to make the optics bigger, as that one guy said (no idea if I even got the right part though) and also rounded some of the edges and added a little colour to it, if you guys like it better that way just add it, if not ignore it?
