How can the humans breathe in the underground tunnels in the matrix sequels if Operation Dark Storm fucked up the sky 700+ years ago killing all plant and animal life.

Wouldn't the atmosphere be radically changed after this long, especially considering all the shit the machines have built.

They don't even use masks they're just walking around?

Ehh, while I like it it's not the canon really and since 2003 nobody has ever brought it up in any official release of book or game or any spinoff.

Also...why do the mechs in Zion not have any protection for the people inside them? Wouldn't you at least go deaf and suffer burns from firing the guns and maybe some of the casings hit you?
