Recently the EPA (or someone) got on the ass of the GE plant (uses mercury in it's light bulbs) I do cleaning at for high levels of mercury in the waste water.

They immediately started an investigation and while I'm not privy to the results I can guess (because they immediately suspected the rest rooms) that it's from my co-workers dumping mop water down toilets.

Now assuming that it was mop water at the source and knowing that my co-workers aren't even mopping in production areas (I am). I'd assume I have an even higher exposure...

So how fucked am I?

PS: I receive no compensation for working around apparently dangerous levels of mercury, gotta love America.

are you an employee of GE or are you working for a contractor there?

either way there should be an industrial hygienist employed by your boss that needs to look into this. You should be having your blood tested regulary as part of their medical surveilance program while working around high levels of metal. Even if levels aren't bad most of the time, you should be getting a test after an incident like that.

as to how fucked you are, it depends on the form and amount of the mercury, your cleaning methods, ppe used, length on the job, etc.
more info and I can tell you more... mostly I'm curious if you sweep the floor or vacuum it. If vacuum, is it a HEPA Hazwaste vac, or something else? Are you required to take an OSHA hazwoper class?

doesn't sound good man, but if they fuck you up you can get some money for your trouble.

tell your concerns to your boss. If you don't get results call OSHA if you live in the US. also talk to a lawyer, they shouldn't charge a cent. also find another job, and make sure you get tested at your boss's expense for mercury.

I charge $250 an hour to mop up mercury, mostly because of all the insurance and testing involved. If they're trading your safety for their money you need to make sure it stops.

notice that I will be working with gloves for the first part. touching mercury is relatively safe, but microscopic particles will stick to the skin and need to be washed off. If not washed, they can find their way into nose and lungs, resulting in more significant poisoning. It was not uncommon for teachers to have kids play with mercury in science class 40 and 50 years ago. Ask your parents, they probably did it.
