Guys, I'm crying right now.

Just looking at this picture makes me feel something strange inside. I guess you could call it "love". I'm in love with space exploration. I've lost interest in everything, besides it. Things that are considered "interesting" by the general population don't cut it for me anymore.

Space really is all I think about all day, every day. I really do cry myself to sleep at night thinking about how I'll never be able to explore it. If only some advanced alien species knew I existed in this life, if only they knew my deep profound love for space. I know that will never happen though. That is the thought that makes me so sad when I look up at the night sky. I'll never be out there, but I'll continue to dream of it until the day I die.

This is exactly how I feel, OP. Every single day.
Just imagine all of those planets out there. Imagine everything out there.
Out of all of the civilizations, cultures, planets, species, galaxies, nebulas, technologies, stars, and who knows what else, we will only know of one (or very few) in our lifetime - our own solar system and the limited amount of extra-terresial planets and stars that we can observe.
I feel depressed again.

I can't wait to see the results from the J-WT. It's going to be absolutely stunning.

Since then I find my mind wanders and I think of all the thinks I am not able to witness, how blind I am to reality, how much more there is that I am unaware of and I just get depressed. This. Space is big and it sucks to be in, but I'll be damned if it isn't pretty to look at with the proper equipment. For the meantime you'll be stuck on this rock, and if we ever do manage to not blow our own heads off and become a space-faring race, it will be a nomadic lifestyle, drifting from one rock to the other. Enjoy life while you can here on our homeworld, because life could be duller spent aboard a cramped spaceship for decades.

We spend so much time looking up, that we often forget to look down.

Hey I really doubt any of you are still listening to this, but I've been reading alot of books by Alastair Reynolds, a really fantastic sci-fi author specializing in space opera. Two of his books specifically made me want to cry just because of the sheer scale involved and the sense that no only will I never seen such wonders of the universe (if aliens even exist) but that even if my extremely distant decedents do find the type of structures in the books, they'll be just as overwhelmed as i would because even millions f years of development is nothing on a galactic scale.

What really got me was the idea in his book House of Suns, that due to the necessary restraints of lightspeed communications, holding a large multi-system civilization together is impossible, and the only way for a culture to survive is to keep moving at near light speed, making periodic contact with others. It just seems so damned unfair that even if we survive long enough to get out there its so hostile to everything, even simple things like talking. I know humans have dealt with month or year long waits between relies, but imaging having to wait millions of years for an answer! its just not fair

Yeah, pretty much this.
I've run through my head many times what a civilization would be like that far in the future and once you understand how vast the distances are between planets you come to the stark realization that if we were to colonize planets in other, distant solar systems you would essentially become isolated from the rest of humanity. I doubt we'll ever achieve some means of transportation that would allow us to travel outside our own galaxy even. Hell, a colony on a planet that far off may very likely fail. Or you could get near enough to do a radio sweep of the planet and find out that it's uninhabitable. We would diverge evolutionarily on these far off planets and if we ever encountered one of our cousin races it might not be peacefully.

>People actually think they can see the colours in nebulae and such

You can't. Those pictures are taken with cameras that have a much wider view of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the colours are artificially added later. In reality you wouldn't see a thing other than any stars within the nebula. If you're very, very lucky though, you might see a subtle grey tinge.

And stop acting like desperate Trekkies. Space is mostly empty (hence the name), and for nearly your entire time (meaning over 99%), all you'll be seeing would be points in a black background, that never ever change, unless you are traveling right towards one, and even then it would take years (this accounts for FTL travel) for it to look noticeably different. Yes, you could enter a state of suspended animation, but you could easily break ties with your friends and family from abusing that technology, a consequence which is not worth seeing generic planet #23,254,290,254,633 up close.

Wars? 95% bullshit no one actually cares about.

Exploration? You'd better be extremely rich if you want to go on even the most basic expedition, that is if you can find something discovering.

WW2 and the moon landing are the last two big unifying things if you don't count the brief patriotic shit associated with 9/11, and those were a while back.
